Scarpia

I'm looking at ways to color wooden buildings without using paint.

On the test panel below, divided by the blue lines, from left to right are

  • pastel (oil) crayon, red light, India ink wash
  • pastel (oil) crayon, red light over gray, India ink wash
  • pastel (oil) crayon, red heavy, India ink wash
  • colored pencil red, India ink wash
  • colored pencil red

Personally, I am kind of liking the oil pastels better than the colored pencils. Any thoughts from folks based on this image?

I'm 100% with you on the oils

I'm 100% with you on the oil pastels.  I think it gives a GREAT faded paint look.  I was going to try something similar to model faded paint on a brick structure of mine so I will be following your work closely.

When is red brick really red brick?

If you look around you, you are bound to realize that even red bricks aren't always the same color and this can vary alot as no two bricks are even the same hsade of red depneding on the polution in the air and how the wind pushes the polution.

I'm also with you on the Oil Pastels

I mentioned using Oil based pastel sticks awhile back and I have used them along with powders and dry pastel sticks for about 35 years.

Not everything is faded to a light flat color, Buildings that have been painted within the past 5 years are not completely faded away and that includes Brick. Red does fade fast because it's a Primary color and primary colors fade faster as they are trying to become a neutral color and sun tries to help as much as possible.

But I suggest you mix and match different colors and different types of the same color intermixed for the weather effect you feel look the best because your the one that needs to look at it.
