A note from my older next door neighbor here in Florida, who is in great anticipation of seeing my new train layout up and running
He is American, but grew up in England during the London bombing of WWII. He still has a British accent,...great guy.

"Wow! Such memories. U mention rhubarb and immediately I think of old Mrs Breed in Railway Cottage, Knebworth, who I was billeted with for a while when all the kids were cleared out of London at the outbreak of war. Both of her sons were killed in the first World War and her husband was gone so she made a big fuss of me.  She looked after the railway crossing and operated the gates. She made the most  delicious rhubarb and custard u ever tasted. Had a garden full of it.  We don't seem to use it in the US now. She had a cow in a barn across the road and made fresh butter and scones twice a week; a taste u will never forget.

And look up the A4 Pacific class steam engines, Sir Nigel Gresley, and Mallard, holder of the world speed record for steam.  The most beautiful art deco streamlined styling and they thundered past the bottom of her garden every day, coming off of the Stevenage straight, hauling the Flying Scotsman and clocking up to 100 mph . My little world would just shake.  Will not see their like again.  Nice to chat.  Robert"

lots of trains

Doing the war there were LOTS of streamliners running past his vantage point.

And he noted yesterday, they were NOT as clean as that one I posted the photo of,...to busy and cleaning was not on the list at that time.

A4's and a Duchess

HI Brian, all,

Last September Sir Nigel looked a bit different -

Sir Nigel is under a heavy rebuild. They don't get much heavier than this. One of the driving wheels can be seen at far left, and the tender is behind the scaffolding at left rear..

But Mallard looked magnificent . Mallard was built for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER)

as did the Duchess of Sutherland, built for the "opposition" London Midland & Scottish Railway during the same time period as the A4's.
