mallard

ok gang i need some help.  I just bought a couple engines on facebook and need help identifing one of them.

It is an sd-9 loco in prr paint scheme.  I know it has sound because it works fine however it will not move.  When I opened it up there was a board I was not familiar with and 3 lights on the inside.  2 amber lights for the headlights and one yellow one kinda in the cab area.  The board has a bunch of plugs in it for vairous wire groupings, and has a big capacitor also incorporated in it.

My question is could this be a broadway limited or a walthers proto 2000 or intermountain.  The intermountain I am not even sure they made one but I have never had any of their stuff so I am throwing it in the mix.

So if this sounds familiar or if you have pics of your innards or have suggestions on why the train wont go but the sounds do please feel free to jump in here.  In the mean time I am going to try to find out why the sound does not work on the rs1 and why the rs11 does nothing.  Both of these look like lok sound decoders and speakers.

mike

Ps i read something about e.stop is an emergency brake.  Would that be the reason it is not moving? or is it one of the bad decoders I have been reading about from Broadway limited

pps oh and yes I looked everywhere on the bloody thing and did not see manufacture markings.

Pics?

It might help if you had some photos of this loco in question.

F6

Do you know the address? Can you blow the horn and turn the headlughts on and off? If yes, then double cluck F6 and see if it will move. Scott Chatfield

YOU are the one who needs to post photos

Mallard, YOU are the one who needs to post photos of innards. From your description, this could be almost anything. If you took the shell off and took some photos and posted them, we could begin to help.

Search

Another option would be to search the internet to see if you find a match.  Type in the road name and number of the loco and I find many times you will come up with something that you are looking for.  Go to Broadway Limited site and see if they show that model and number, I know that Atlas has a listing of all past models that they have produced, most with photos, this is where I wouod start.  Road name, number, even model if you are sure, SD9, .

If there is nothing on the bottom of the loco to indicate the mfg, you can pretty much rule out P2k, Atlas, Kato and others , Broadway I am unsure of as I do not have any.

Stab in the dark

Dear Mike,

Agreed, if you can provide a pic of the loco-in-question, the rank-n-file here will likely be able to identify it.

However, from your description, my gut is telling me it's a BLI SD7/9.

http://www.broadway-limited2.com/support/BlueLine%20SD7%20SD9%20Exploded%20View%20Diagram.pdf

http://www.broadway-limited2.com/support/SD7%20Expl%20View%20(2017%20Prod).pdf

http://www.broadway-limited2.com/support/SD9%20Expl%20View%20(2017%20Prod).pdf

If one of the above exploded diagrams "looks right" compared to the loco on your workbench,
then performing a factory-reset following the instructions in the relevant BLI manual

https://www.broadway-limited.com/support/manuals/Final%20BlueLine%20Diesel%20Manual%207.17.08.pdf
(see Page 7)

might be your best bet...

IF this is one of the "BlueLine" locos which needed a seperate DCC Motor-only decoder added,
(see Page 9 of the manual
https://www.broadway-limited.com/support/manuals/Final%20BlueLine%20Diesel%20Manual%207.17.08.pdf)

then the FAQ might have something relevant to say...

"Sound but no movement (or movement but no sound)"

Looks like the one.  Thanks for the info.  pretty sure it is missing the motor controller.  Gotta take another look

Thanks to the others as well.  I realize a pic would have been better off but:

a) not sure how to post pics here

b)was not anywhere near the engine when I posted the question.

Is there somewhere to read how to post pics?

Search says....

Dear Mike,

Put "how to post pictures" into the Search box at top right of this page,
Should take you straight to the relevant "how to" post...

Update

Update in the sd9. I ordered the recommended decoder by bli according to the downloaded instructions earlier in this post.  If done differently i would have chisen a different decoder due to the fitment but it did work. Now everything works as it should.

Next question. Where canni find parts for it.  A couple handrails are broken and missing the plow on both ends. Can the handrails be fixed or no and does bli sell parts?

BLI Parts

Mike--The only way to find out if BLI has the parts is to call. 386-673-8900 1 to 4 Tues thru Fri. Be prepared to wait on the phone. When you do get through, they will try to help.

Are you sure you are looking for the plow? This would not have been standard equipment on a PRR SD9.

Getting plows...

If BLI can’t help, Details West has a wide range of plows.  They are easily installed.  Rebel Locomotive on Shapeways also sells an assortment of plows, his products are very good.  Search Rebel Locomotive on Shapeways to view his parts.

plow or prow?

The BLI SD9 didn't come with a snowplow on either end. It did come with a wedge-like prow under the coupler. I don't recall if this was part of the footboard assembly. Is this what you are missing? Scott Chatfield

Another only way

I have had good luck finding diagrams of BLI's locos that show their parts. Also e-mailing the techsupport to ask for availability of the parts.

http://www.broadway-limited.com/  and click on SUPPORT

No long wait time on the phone.

Steve.  Have not decided

Steve.

Have not decided wether or not if i am going to keep the sd9. If i do i will patch it out for my yet to be named home road and will add a plow.  But both ends are missing the footboard wedge piece.  The price could not be beat and the other engines i bought from him were easy fixes via the photos. Turned out they were all very simple fixes.  The other two were just dirty wheels although the rs11 i bought had a sound decoder that i just could not get to work at all so i just replaced the decoder with an nce dasr decoder for now.  The rs1has sound as well, runs great but no sound.  I believe both were loksound decoders.
