If anyone has an exploded-view parts diagram of these well cars, I'd appreciate it if they could scan it and send me a copy. Not sure if they Athern or Atlas. Picked up three sets at a recent train show and didn't notice they have a few missing or broken parts such as the ladders. Not very bright of me, but I did get them at rellay good prices.

The bottoms of those look

The bottoms of those look more like a Walthers set.  Is the main body (frame and well section) metal or plastic?

Here's a web site where you

Here's a web site where you can find drawings of your cars.

http://hoseeker.net/

Click on Liturature, on the top of the left hand column, and then scroll down the page to Walthers.  When the Walthers page opens, the box in the middle, click on Diagrams.  Scroll down the list that opens up, and look for: 3900 Thrall Car 1985.

This is actuall a diagram for the "stand alone" well car, like your first picture, but the parts, as far as ladders, etc., would be the same for the 5 unit set.

After another look at your cars, I think yours are the plastic body, with the weight in the bottom.  They also made a metal version.

Their are other manufacturers that made detail kits for these cars, such as Detail Assc., Details West, and Plano makes etched brass and stainless steel walkway kits.

Sometimes a search on Ebay will turn up a lot of these kits, or you can go right to their web sites.

wcrails:

The cars have the metal body.

I'll look up your leads tomorrow, as it's getting past my bed time.

Thanks again for your help!

definitely Walthers

The upper photo is the original Walthers model of the Thrall "stand alone" 48-foot well car. The model came out around 1991. The lower photo is their 5-unit Thrall 48-foot well car, which came out around 1993. (I'm talking when the models came out, not their prototypes.) I doubt Walthers has any parts left for models that old. I think you can find some parts on Shapeways. If it's just walkway and stanchions you need look at Plano's etched parts. They'll be stronger. Another vote for Plano Model Products

Depending on how you handle them, you might want to consider using a partial application of Plano Model Products parts. As chunky as they are, I would leave the walkway studs on the cars but replace the walkways with the see through parts. That seems like the most durable setup. The fine brass pieces with scale stanchions can get tedious and do not fare well with rough handling.

They have grab irons and stanchions to replace the broken plastic junk that came with the model and it ends up looking pretty good.
