Okay, so, my Proto 2000 S1 has a Digitrax DN146IP (N scale, though it's an HO engine) because there is just no room inside the engine for an HO decoder, let alone an HO sound decoder.

My question is, is there an N scale sound bug compatible with it?

I can't seem to find one on the Digitrax site (and the only sound bug they have there is too big)

I would really like sound with this engine, but dang, there is no room!

No Bugs available.. Which is

No Bugs available.. Which is not a bad thing. IMO they never took off and the sound quality and tech issues they had never really got figured out.

If staying with Digitrax you will have to work with a http://www.digitrax.com/products/sound-decoders/sdxn136ps/ or the 8 bit version.

TCS will give much better sound, but I do not think your gonna have room in the engine. You might look at Soundtraxx http://www.soundtraxx.com/dsd/tsunami2/products/tsu1100.php

Good luck in tight spaces... You could also stick a playing card in one of the spokes!!!!

Loksoound micro?

these are really small. It what I intend to put into my switchers when I get to that stage

Then sugar cube type speaker / cell phone speaker and I think you'd be surprised that it will all fit

Sound in a P2K Alco S-1

10 pounds in a 5 pound bag, but I think it can be done. A couple of years ago I installed a non-sound decoder in a friends P2K S-1. It was probably a TCS T-1, a typical "lump" style decoder. I also installed a KA-1 or KA-2 KeepAlive. Fantastic performance in one of his yards. The install required at least partial removal of the upper weight, maybe the whole thing, but I don't recall exactly. In any event, with the KA, the missing weight isn't missed at all. My point is that it can be done.

But you want sound. If my friend asked me to install sound in his S-1 today, my first thought would be putting a sugar cube in a hole cut in the floor of the cab. Here is a MRH thread with good pictures which discussed doing this in a P2K SW type:

Also, today we have available the KA-3 and KA-4 from TCS, both significantly smaller than the earlier KeepAlives.

Your Alco S-1 needs 539 non-turbo sound. I know the Tsunami2 has this, but after cursory checks of Loksound and TCS, I couldn't find any others.

You might consider getting a block of balsa wood and whittling some component shapes to see what you can fit before spending any real money. I think you have room.

Have fun.

Thanks!

I'm sure it can be done...

I have a philosophy that says "Anything is DCC ready... if you believe in yourself"

At some point, I plan t make a Bachmann Norris engine with DCC and sound. I saw it done once in a Youtube video, and well... if it's on Youtube, it must be true! (plus, that tender is big enough for a nice N scale decoder, and sugar cube speaker)

It can be done. This is a quite old install. Modern methods including using an iPhone speaker would make it marginally easier.
