Hi friends,

since I am still in my vacation time and going nowhere this year I am catching up on the layout...

Today I did some more detailing on the diesel service area. Still need some oil drums, skids ( probably going to buy some of these online tonite) and other junk you find on these area's. As for lights, I am waiting untill the background buildings are done so I can wire this side of the layout as one light block.

The pics...

Diesel Servicing Pad

Jappe-

I'm guessing the weathering on the concrete pad is a raw umber/lamp black wash as you've done in the past, am I correct?  As always, greatly impressed by the effect you've been able to produce.

Lookin' gooood!

Very nice, so far!  I'm hoping to do a small Diesel Engine Service Facility, based on one the NS has, in Pennsylvania... I'll try to post some proto pixes I have, to show that you're pretty dead on...

Diesel service area...

Thanks for the nice and with that, encouraging comments my friends.

You are probably the only ones seeing the progress on the H's&T's since I am considered a "loner" where I am at, sure we have modelrailroad clubs overhere, but " been there, done that" . 99% of the clubs overhere tend to be " the one with the most toys...." clubs, you know the story. Further more, modeling the US of A  in H0-scale overhere is like going to a "Honda owners meeting" with one of my Harley's....lol. So, I'll stick with you, my MRH friends.

Rich, yep, same technique, raw umber, lamp black and playing around with the weathering.

Michael, the backdrop is " freehand" with artist oil paints, for the clouds, titanium white as a base with different nuances adding payene grey, highlights done with pure, using brushes and spunge. At the end just a light pass with a mist of white, done with an airbrush. If I would do it over I'd put less clouds or even no clouds on it making it look more like a haze,  but it is what it is.

Aran, the portapotties are "BLMA"  one of MRH sponsors  http://www.model-trains-universe.com/cheker/cheker.php?idmk=6  (repainted, weathered with some drybrush at the end) Without BLMA,  the modern modelrailroad world would be different. Thanks Craig !!!

Norm, looking forward for those pictures, since beeing in Belgium (Europe) the only references of the real thing I have, is pictures and the more I see pictures, the happier I am...........

Ok,... 9.50 AM, time for another cup of tea....

Diesel Service Area (update)

I agree.  It looks fantastic.  Don't forget the sand spills.  I don't know if you need them here but if you find the need to model smaller hoses laying on the ground one trick is to use solder.  Coil up the solder and spray it with gray or red primer.  It lays down with a natural sag which can be useful.  Keep up the great work.

Interesting hose idea

Lance,

Have you ever tried to scale your hose idea?  Working in N I'm always looking to duplicate techniques that make your layouts (and Jappe's) so good, but I find it a challenge to scale down from 1:87 to 1:160 and have it work.  I assume you could use thin solder - to a point?

Interesting Hose Idea

I don't see why it wouldn't work in N scale Phillip.  .032" solder would be 5" in N scale - just a tad thick but not bad.  I don't know if they make solder thinner than that.

Looks Great!

Gave me some ideas.  I am also doing a layout in N scale in the fifties after 3 HO's...I am not too swift at prototypical development of my layouts so this is good fodder for me.  So in the fifties would the engine shed be more likely wood??  I would like to be close to realistically correct...and I copy alot...so forgive me.

help is always appreciated,

For the most part any new engine house built after 1950 was made of sheet metal Corrugated Metal or Brick and concrete.

After the many fires that caused complete loss of Roundhouses, equipment, Tools and lives most railroads pretty much outlawed wood structures for engine houses.

From all the researching I have done on Roundhouse and engine house construction and function, Brick seems to be the main material used for the structures that they planned as permanent and branch lines, smaller railroads and lumber and mining used the corrugated metal structures so they could be broke down and moved when needed.

5 miles west of my home here in Winchester Virginia The Winchester & Western RR has an Engine service Yard with a 2 Stall engine House Made of steel I Beams and insulated Corrugated Metal sidings and roof. This Building Has been there since 1978 and is a bit on the weathered side now but is still a functioning Engine house. They also have a separate one stall car barn off one track about 20 feet from the Engine house built the same way.

Dan - is there any chance you could post some pictures of that engine house and the car barn along with some measurements? I too like to scratch build my structures and am always looking for good ideas.

Thanks

You can't get on the property

You can't get on the property and the photos I saw were in the City news paper and those filled the whole page of the News paper and are way to big to make a copy on my copier sorry But I will see what I can come up with.
