Forgive me, but I would like to ask a question.      Do any of you own or had the chance to operate the new generation of Rivarossi locos that came out last year?

I ask this because I have 2 old GG1s built by Rivarossi in 1970 something. I thought they quit the hobby but I just learned they have produced several new models.  My GG1s are the best in my small fleet. Powerful, quiet, detailed.  But run DC.  I now run DCC and will be upgrading my loco fleet....my past tells me go back to Rivarossi.

This had my dentures hit the floor:

Dizzy, you say ?

They say when standing between trains running in opposing directions, that's a natural sensation.  They also say, if you find yourself so situated, Sit, or Lie Down!

(Awesome vids... I was sitting!)

I'm not going to market the competition, but Bachmann has produced a bunch of GG-1's, too.   How they compare, I can't say, but they are comparable in appearance to the old version.

Peter

@JD

I happend to be lucky enough to win one from the Hornby Rivarossi manufacture's booth drawing at a train show a couple of years ago.  Had my choice of any road name for a DCC U25C, without sound.  I chose a CB&Q unit.  Initally I was going to just sell it off, but then I ran it on our club layout.  These things are awesome pullers, extremely smooth running, and crawl right out of the box.  So impressed was I, that I bought a second unit with sound.  Out of the box they MU'd together with no adjustments to speed tables.  I highly recommend them.  Right now you can pick them up really cheap.  The CB&Q DCC units without sound are selling for $74 on Ebay.  My sound unit I picked up for $114. From what I understand, Hornby/Rivariossi has discontinued these, so when they are gone their gone.

Rivarossi engines

Hornby has purchased a number of European manufactures, including Rivarossi, Lima, Jouef and Arnold.

Cheers,

Unfortunate coincidence?

It was unfortunate, I think, that what were essentially two new manufacturers to US HO in plastic (Rivarossi had been gone a long time, and Korea Brass was... Brass) both introduced the same prototype model nearly simultaneously.

It can't have helped either of their sales numbers, having to split what might have all gone to one of them.

Something similar happened to Kato and Athearn with their C44-9W models, but both of those companies were much more established in the market.

ironic

Ironic two manufacturers released the same model of prototype at nearly the same time.   Its sad it hurt them and their bottom line.

@gsmalco07 Thank you (and everyone else for the input/knowledge)  You sir have just made me do recent searches on ebay for these locos.  I havent found anything yet...but I am determined to get this model.

-edit- I just purchased 2 PRR U25Cs on ebay..240 bucks.  My wife is gonna be very unhappy with me ....time to "duck and cover"

Almost forgot...

I have noticed some manufacturers doing the GG1.  I have no issues with Bachman to this point.

There are other folks like Trix and MTH that have caught my interest (motorized pantographs for one thing) and if they run like the old Rivarossi GG1, I'd probaly buy them eventually.

forgot to add

I failed to mention that the models have robust metal hand rails/stancions, and the axle bearing caps rotate.  Their pretty cool models all around.  It is a shame the product didn't do well, mechanically they were a superior addition to the model market.

JD, two for the price of one ain't a bad deal.
