Building my first HO layout (4x8 table top, 2 mainlines). Some of my equipment is pre 1950 Steam loco built by my Dad. No way I am taking those apart to try to add sound cards. My newer stuff none is DCC ready, hence my 7 block DC layout w/ 2 CABs. So I want to add some sound, I see lots of MRC discontinued attempts (#210, #312, #1025, Symphony 77, Sound & Power); keeping on eye on eBay for something reasonable - obviously if I want to spend big $$, better off going to DCC. But the reason I built this layout was to reuse my late father's equipment he built as a young man. Late in life he started to look at doing some modelling but never got back to it before he passed.

So - if I'm going to spend something under $100, any ideas what's the best option for the price? Am I missing another option besides MRC (Sountraxx early stuff looks limited). Newbie appreciates any help from folks who have done this before. And DCC is not an option I am considering (have 6 steam or diesel loco's now, not looking for any more). Thanks

Static sound controller

There is this Scenic Sound Controller available in the UK, but it is not cheap. You can mount a fixed speaker to the layout and trigger sounds using switches, or reed switches in the track triggered by a magnet on the loco.

thanks, interesting product,

thanks, interesting product, price equivalent to Kato's sound machine available here from Japan... but at that price, conversion to DCC really has come into effect and running both DC and DCC side by side.  Really trying to hold from DCC conversion to see if battery powered wireless becomes really viable...

Kato

I saw one of those Kato gizmos at a train show, it actually seemed to work pretty good, decent sound and it senses the back emf and adjusts the sound accordingly. It is meant for n scale, not sure if it would work with older power hungry equipment. The MRC systems would be the alternative, They make sound and you should be able to find one cheap on eBay.
