Here’s an option for relatively inexpensive backdrop development:

1. If you know Photoshop, paint your backdrop using layers at 1:1 size and 100 dpi resolution (Photoshop will allow you to save a REALLY long file – mine was over 42 feet!),
2. Send your files to a trustworthy large format printer (in my case I sent final files to my friend, Bill Brillinger),
3. Get the files back in brilliant color, trim, and clip top and bottom to 1/8 in. masonite backdrop,
4. Done! Enjoy spectacular backdrop that transforms your layout room from just a room to a real environment!

Below is a photo showing three of my four backdrop sections in Bill’s office:

Hey Scott

That looks pretty darn nice. I’m a color freak and that looks good to me.

Also nice to finally see behind the magician’s curtain.

Thanks, Rick…

…do you mean, Bill’s magic curtain?

Behind the curtain

Shhhh... No discussing what's behind the curtain, It's classified.

Also I hope you like them as much in person Scott!

Well, there are a couple of curtains here

But I’ve been following Scott’s progress for quite awhile and know much more detail that has been released publicly (and someday Scott I would love to visit). You Iowa railroad guys are just having too much fun doing that amazing work).

But Bill is a bit more of a mystery figure to me. In the last year I’ve had Bill do some pretty crazy decals and it has been and will continue to be a really fun adventure. He answers emails, gets the product out real quick and is an artist in his own right. Oh yeah, a good guy too.......is that possible?. He also lives in a foreign country but has been known to ship from REDACTED FOR SECURITY REASONS. For awhile I thought maybe we had a shapeshifter amongst us, but he has denied this. I’ve heard that he can even seek out other talented model railroaders deep in jungles of foreign lands. A time traveler is a possibility. But now that evidence has been posted that recognizable tools are employed in his magical endeavors  I’m starting to lean towards a more reasonable explanation like an Ironman or half cyborg situation.

Hahahah

Rick, I wish even some of that was true

Although I must say, living on the US-CANADA border certainly has it's advantages for shippiing.

Cheers!!

Have you stopped taking orders? I saw on TrainOrders someone said you weren't taking laser orders anymore.

Memo Note

Have to make a note of this subject thread in my memory (which is getting overloaded), and this reply will help me to return to it.

I don't know Photoshop, but I have certainly heard of it. You are saying to utilize Photoshop to build up the scene you want printed out?....and that includes overlapping some photo images utilizing Photoshop software??

Thanks, Brian

Hello, Brian

Photoshop is Adobe’s imaging program which one can use to illustrate with. For example, you could setup up a number of layers and then using the program’s brushes paint a scene.

To utilize the program to its full advantage there is quite a learning curve, so it’s not something for the impatient. And, of course, it helps to have the talent to illustrate.

In my case, I have a talented illustrator friend who painted the backdrop for me. She works exclusively in Photoshop. I then broke the backdrop down into sections, with overlap, that are more manageable to work with and since my backdrop base is exactly 24 inches in height, I’ll simply clip the sections to the base at the top and bottom.

Hope this helps.

I'm not taking any new customers for custom lasercutting.
I'm way too busy with custom decals.

Existing customers, such as yourself, I'll make it work.
