Several months ago Kato announced that they would be releasing some new N-Scale Kato F units (Western Pacific shell) with the option of having a factory installed ESU Loksound decoder.   I pre-ordered this engine from one of my favorite hobby shops (at a significant discount) so I could see how the decoder was installed. The video above includes some pictures of the decoder installation as well as showing what it sounds like while running on my layout.   The shell will probably be changed to one of my ATSF engines.

Looks good.  The Kato Es and

Looks good.  The Kato Es and Fs are fairly straight forward for LokSound install. You do need to cut some room for the speakers.  Only gets "difficult" when you want to start adding custom lighting on the A units (markers, ditch lights (if the units are now running in modern era), gyralight, etc).

N-Scale Kato F units

Rick,

I've done some Digitrax sound installs into Kato F units with the Aztec modified chassis for the 16mm speaker that goes in the rear where Kobo cut the weight in half.  They sound good but not as good as the Loksound. Do you have any pictures of any that you have done?

Kato F3 LokSound Install

Sure.  These photos are a bit old; I now use the Soberton 8x12mm speakers with the Keystone Designs Shapeways enclosure, rather than what is here. Also, note the 2 Tantalum capacitors for a modicum of keep-alive

Here is the area of the rear weight marked for milling

and here is the frame, milled, with the speaker enclosure in the pocket

A top down look at the install (in progress). Note the small circuit board, where I run the wires for the lights (note SMD resistors) from decoder and lights

This unit got two Mars Lights, a white and red one, fully configured and controllable.  Here is YouTube video
