I am not sure if this is the proper forum.

I am a rookie on SketchUp, and what I want to do is create a cube, similar to a child's block.

This would be a cube, with a letter on each face.  The letter would be recessed into the surface.

For example, the letter "N" would be made of three rectangles.  How would I "unite" them, and "extrude"

them into the cube, in unison.  And not have a "surface" over the letter.

Basic Idea

Good evening Mike,

There's the basic idea.

  1. Start with the cube
  2. Use the 3d print tool to place the text on the side of the cube.
  3. the text will be a group so push / pull will not work
  4. click on the text line to select all the text
  5. right click, select intersect then with model
  6. select all the text then right click , explode
  7. each letter of the text can now be pusher or pulled.

This should get you into the ball park.

Cad cam

Thanks, John,

That was good help.  I am able to make the letter come out of the block,

but I can't seem to get it to go into the block.

On a side note, is there a way to "read" the cursor - kind of like Paint where you see the x and y

coordinates?

cheers,

Mike O

A couple more ideas

you're welcome

A couple things to try:

  1. If the block is a group push pull will not work so you need to explode the group
  2. I find it easier to place the 3d text flat without extrusion,   in the 3d window I uncheck fill and extrude.
  3. I have not seen x,y,z coordinates.  not even in the entry info window.   you can use the tape measure to place guide lines at exact values.    Place a couple guides to determine locations.
