To All: Here we see Rock Island RS-3m on a caboose hop near Missouri Avenue Yard on my layout. The unit was put together using a Putyman Locomotive Works shell on an Atlas RS-3 chassis. I interchange this shell with two other shells on this chassis. The locomotive is detailed with grab irons, hand rails, fire cracker antenna, sun shades, roof lift rings, weathering and number boards. I made the cab herald and the Rock Island name is individual vinyl letters. Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout.

Curious why you didn't

Curious why you didn't purchase a correct decal sheet from Microscale.  They would look way better than the stick on lettering you used.  The black on the herald should be red...

RI RS-3m

Dear Sir; I am not concerned with 100% accuracy As a matter of fact unit 456 did not have the herald on the cab. I thought the herald on the cab looked neat. I did not purchase the Microscale decal as they cost $8.25 for a decal I would only use once. Too expensive. Besides Microscale decals always need dull coat spray as the decals fall apart even if new! Yours, Elvin Howland.

Oh, OK.  I've used Microscale

Oh, OK.  I've used Microscale (Krasel) decals since the 70's.  I've had very few fall apart and that is only because they were old.  By spraying a clear coat over them, it does "save" the decal and they become usable again.

To each, their own!

Microscale

Dear Sir I am not condemning Microscale decals. I just ordered 3 alphabet set a few days ago. Yours, E.H.

RI 456

Always neat to see Rock Island stuff posted.  I model RI also and used to go to Silvis, Illinois all the time to see their shops back in the early 70's.  I have an old Kodak 126 shot of #456 when it was in the dead line.  Very neat, Elvin

I like it! Was not aware

I like it! Was not aware anyone made a shell for this one-off locomotive. What other shells do you use on this chassis?
