The North Coast Limited. Growing up in Montana, we took countless trips from Montana to Chicago on the North Coast Limited. I loved the Lowey paint scheme and wondered how I could have those colors show up on my freelance railroad as I do connect to the Northern Pacific. Years ago I picked up an Athearn Genisis F-7 and some Walthers passenger cars in the Lowey paint scheme and used it as a tourist train from Logan, Mt down to West Yellowstone, MT to take tourist to Yellowstone National park. The NP did run trains from Livingston, MT to Gardiner, MT from the early 1900's until about 1955 when the service was dropped. I model the transition era in 1957. A little bit of modelers license.

To me the North Caost limited was one of the best looking passenger trains around.

For some reason I decided to try to come up with version of the NCL. I didn't have big bucks to spend trying to find accurate passenger cars as this could be expensive. I did manage to come up with a Stewart F-3 in the Lowey paint scheme, but it did not have any road numbers and lacked a lot of details.

The dark green color was wrong and the Northern Pacific painted the upper body grills the dark green body color. The winterization hatch was added and the standard horns were removed to be replaces by the 5 chime horn that the NP used. Decals were added after painting and in this photo some details had been added. Handrails still had to be installed on th eStewart unit on the left.

Now I was getting close to the A-B-A consist that the Northern Pacific used for the North Coast Limited. I had to find a B unit. I managed to get one from a member of a model railroad forum I belong to but it too had no road numbers, the dark green color was wrong and the upper grill had to be repainted. I was a Stewart unpowered dummy unit. A steam generator was also added.

The B unit was repainted and road numbers and handrails were added and I finally had some semblance of the NCL consist.

I still have a few details to add as the firecracker antenna, spark arrestors and MU hoses I need are on backorder. Hopefully these parts will arrive soon and can be added and the handrails straightened out.

Still haven't figured out why I built it because as I mentioned, it would never had a reason to show up on my layout.

Beatuiful Paint Scheme

Montanan, I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the Lowey scheme and how beautiful it was.  I too fondly remember the NCL (and GN and MILW) passenger trains when they arrived in Seattle in my youth (1950s).

When I first got into model railroading in 1972, I stopped in Gladys Trains in San Diego, an up on the wall they had an American Flyer NP passenger set, with the A/F Alco PA's.  I was smitten.  Then devastated a year or so later when I discovered the NP didn't run PA units.  Bummer!  I think the Lowey paint scheme on a NP passenger train with PA diesels is just the cat's meow.  Often thought of painting up a set of PA's in that scheme and making up a train, as a "what if?" train.

Great work on your diesels - they really look marvelous!

North Coast Limited?

Good work, but this sure looks like the Vancouver, WA depot to me, which means it was another NP train than the Limited:

I believe you are correct on

I believe you are correct on the location. I was just using various photos to help locate detail locations on the locomotives. Here is a photo of the North Coast Limited in Livingston, MT. By the way, my model railroad club in in the basement of the freight depot seen in the distance in the right side of the photo. The second photo is coming downgrade from the top of Pipestone (Homestake) Pass.

I just couldn't resist, as I always marvel at people who can tell any location from a photo, no matter how obscure. I saw that and said, "Hey,I know where that is!"

Wrong color, go figure

Good thread, your info on the NP F3's by Stewart now leads me to believe I need to get rid of the pair I bought a few years back at the LHS in Seattle.

Plus, I haven't seen any real action ever on Homestake, made it there way too late. What a line, absolutely amazing.  Thanks for posting this, seriously helpful.

Yes, wrong color

I had ordered the Microscale decals for the F-3 and as soon as it arrived, I could see that the color was off. To me it seemed to be a bit more brown. Not having used my air brush in years and being a fan of Floquil when I was doing custom painting, I was at a loss until I found out that Tru-Color had a perfect match, air brush ready.

The colors on the Athearn F-7 and Walthers passenger cars were right on. Here are the Stewart F-3 on the left  after having details and decals applied and the Athearn F-7 on the right, the colors match very closely.

Not too bad. Had the same color problem with the B unit, but an easy fix,

Tru Color

I don't have the numbers handy. When I first emailed Tru-Color to see if they had the colors available, I had missed them due to all of the colors that they have available.

I told them that I was wanting to paint the NP Lowey paint scheme and they sent the paint, NP dark green and NP light green is all that is on the bottles. You might email them. They are quick to respond. The paint did not require and thinning for air brush use by the way.

The decals are from Microscale. I'm sure that they'll have them for N scale.

Good luck on the project. Post some photos when you're done

Here's a video of my version of the North Coast Limited heading into some hidden staging tracks. Still trying to find all of the proper passenger cars for the NCL (that I can afford)

A beautiful train deserves: an engine crew, close coupling, soft diaphragms, and broad curves. Beautiful work! John Colley, Sonoma, cA

Thanks for the comments.When

Thanks for the comments.

When I was a kid we used to visit relatives in Indiana and with relatives working on both the Milwaukee Road and the Northern Pacific, we were abe to ride first class. Depending of the availibility of rooms and the schedule, we would either take the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha from Montana to Chicago or the Norht Coast Limitied to the Twin Cities and then transrer to the railroad that best matched our schedule.

I really enjoyed the NCL and the food was always great. A while back I managed to find a cool book with the recipies from the Northern Pacific. We use it fairly often.

This is the  Vancouver, WA depot.  The photo shared on the 11/20/2017 post, according to the information sheet from the website RRpicturearchive.net, the location is somewhere in Michigan.  In looking at old photos, the Vancouver depot has space between the depot and tracks which creates distance.  There are 2nd story dormers at each end of the depot, and there is no elevator in the background.  It looks the same today, with a lawn/flower garden now.[0000357108]
