I have 3 Branchline passenger cars that are painted yellow and gray for Union Pacific. I want to remove the red car name and replace it with a different name. On other models I have successfully removed car numbers with 91% alcohol. I tried it on one of the car sides and the yellow paint around the car name came off beautifully  and left the car number intact. Does anyone know what paint might have been used for the red name? Is there something that would remove the red name and leave the background armour yellow?

Since I am now going to have to patch the armour yellow background, does anyone know a good formula? I have some Polly-Scalle armour yellow but it is very yellow.

Some manufacturers use ink, and not paint, for the lettering. Scalecoat make a stripper which is effective on many of the inks.  Walthers number is  640-10568. I suggest you apply sparingly with a micro brush and let it sit for a bit  (minutes, not hours) to see how it works. I have used the stripper in conjunction with light pressure of a pencil eraser to remove road name lettering with minimal impact to the underlying paint..
