I have been going through my locomotives and getting them ready to run on the layout.  I have a Walthers SW1 that has an intermittent short in the motor.  I spent several hours going through all of the pickups and wiring making sure it was the motor.  When you first put power to it it shows a short and then a couple seconds later it will run.  Naturally I can't convert it to DCC like that.

It seems the little Mashima can motors are out of production.  Has anyone repowered one of these little engines?

They have 12 x 15 mm (0.394'' x 0.59''), 12 x 20 mm (0.394'' x 0.787''), and 12 x 25 mm (0.394 x 0.984'') motors.

Coreless motors are not as

Coreless motors are not as simple as can motors. The run best with pure DC. If one uses a PWM power pack or DCC the PWM frequency should be as high as possible but more than about 20 kHz.

Walthers was advertising

Walthers was advertising newer run SW1s on sale for $59.98.  The old bodies slip onto the new drives.  Probably the easiest way to go, instead of spending all the time and money to get the old ones to run somewhat like the new ones.  You would have to figure out how the add the working lights into the old shell, then plug in a decoder and go.

DCC sound conversion?

Hi gang

Merry Christmas to all...  has anyone added DCC sound to one of the newer Walthers Mainline SW1’s?  I have had great experience with a walthers mainline dash 8. Excellent runner. As noted by MILW199 these SW1s are running $50-60 new for DCC ready on MBK and walthers which seems like a good value

Thx

jeff
