I saw the other discussion regarding diesels that everyone would like to see produced. So I made this one for steam people too. Tell what you would want to see (Excluding brass) produced, reissued, or would just like to have.

As for me, I have several, but I would like to see BLI produce a rendition of the PRR S2 6-4-4-6 Steamer. it would be difficult to fit on 22" radius curves. Other than that, I would love to see an Empire State Express Set (non-mth) or a reissue of Rivarossi's blue goose. Tell me what you think.

I'd like to see a nice classic late 19th/early 20th century 4-4-2 in HO scale.  They're a step up from the 4-4-0's, yet still can manage tight curves, and won't look too awkward on them.

SPNG or Tweestsie, hon3. I think these would be popular enough to be worthwhile. But a MacArthur s116 in hon3 would be acceptable as well, I'm kinda shocked there's not a HOm version available overseas. RR

I'll say again

I'll say again from the previous thread.

I would love to see a bunch of NON-USRA steam locos done, most of all the Mississippi Central ALCO 2-8-2's. All the USRA models are way to big and long to use for the MC engines.

Atlantics, Camelbacks, small Pacifics, to many to list. Don't get me wrong, I love watching the big articulateds and other big engines run, but why do they have to keep reproducing them over and over again.

The newest small loco I know of is the Athearn/Roundhouse 2-8-0s and they run great. How about a 2-8-2 or a 4-6-2 of the same size?

Small steam

A 2-8-0 camelback of the P&R I-4 or I-5 size or something along the size of the I-2 (48-50" drivers, slide valves).

A 4-4-0 from the 1890's that is NOT the Mantua General or the Bachmann model (those two designs have been in production for 50-60 years, don't need another copy, the 4-4-0 was the most produced engine in US history by dozens of manufacturers and railroads, there are other designs.)

A 4-6-0 from the 1890's (preferably with evenly spaced drivers)

An 0-6-0 from the 1880's or 1890's (we have a gazillion USRA 0-6-0's)

An 0-4-0 from the 1880's or 1890's

A really good designer could build a couple earlier style boilers and like the Roundhouse, IHC or Model Power series, put them on  several different wheel arrangements (the prototype did the same thing.)  That would minimize tooling costs.

I have a few A small

I have a few

A small ish 2-8-0 with the wide spacing between two of the drivers would be nice.

But my biggest wish is a C&O 2-8-2 K-3 with the flying pumps.

Wish list?

A 2-4-4-2 in Southern Green that ISN'T a rather expensive brass model that, while pretty, sounds like a loud electric razor when it runs.

Speaking of Southern, and steam...

A model of Southern Railways #1360. One of Southerns ONLY Streamlined locos.

Here's the prototype:

WHY IS THIS NOT IN HO SCALE, AND ON MY LAYOUT!?!?!?!

Other Non USRA Designs

I would like to see some steam locomotives produced without the sand and steam domes molded in place, so that we could place the sand and steam domes in a non USRA configuration, without having to cut up existing boilers. My favorite prototype railroad is the Soo Line, and their 4-6-2 light Pacific locomotives had a tapered boiler, but had the oval shaped sand dome further back from the smokestack, and close to the steam dome, while USRA designs have more space between the domes. The Bachmann 2-8-0 has the domes too close together and too large of sand dome to represent most consolidation type locomotives, but if the domes were left off its boiler shell, it could be outfitted as desired to better match certain prototypes. I also would like to see the clear vision tender produced again, it used to be on the Rivarossi 0-8-0, and the Bachmann Chinese Mikado, but neither of those tender shells are produced today.

PRR S2

Here is my vote for the PRR S2 6446.

While we are wishing, I keep hoping Walthers will come out with the "Fleet of Modernism PRR passenger train.

How about a Texas Type T&P 2-10-4 that would not require a bank loan to own.

Speaking of a Prarie...

The Bachmann Prairie... especially the one in Southern Green.

I would LOVE to see a retooling of this, so it can be made DCC and sound, without having to do major surgery on it... and with some added detail, maybe? I look at it today, and it still haven't changed from that "toy" look that it was 30-40 years ago.

I don't even care if they keep the smoke (that would be cool if they did) just... make a Sound Value version, or at the very least, a DCC Ready one. And again... while retooling it, some added detail would be nice!

51572.jpg

I honestly can't tell the new version from the "bargain" one they sold in the 80s...

51504.jpg

(if they did a "Spectrum" version, I'd be all over it)

Oh, and photos on the wish list would be kinda cool... I keep having to Google stuff, because apparently I don't know enough about engines as I like to fool myself into thinking I do!

A modular engine would be

A modular engine would be nice.

Build a basic engine with a boiler that has its domes and other details added on. So that with relatively little work you could remove the domes and cab and replace them.  With 3D printing it is not hard to create new domes or Cab or other detail parts.  The hard part is getting the current parts off and filling in the wholes left behind.  The advent of 3D printing is something that manufacturers will at some point need to address.  As it is going to radically change the hobby.

In the short term it allows for custom parts like replacement domes like the C&O HS has available to replace those on the Bachmann 2-6-6-2 to better match the C&O prototype.  This I think will become more common.  In the long term I think we will see mostly 3D printed locomotives that used a modular drive with custom built (3D printed) bodies.

That would be my favorite,

That would be my favorite, too, Dee.

Just the right size for a branch line operation with tender footboards and a tender back up head light.

She would go around tight wyes and fit almost any turntable. Several migrated to the US in later years and could be found on short and excursion lines.

I am saving my money for the one Rapido says they will eventually do probably around $500.+ but you only need one. Beside it's probably 2-5 years in the future anyhow.

Barry, The woes of modeling Canadian railroads ; ) too little available in steam. I hope Rapido does a good job and works out any bugs by learning from their releases of steam prior to that model.

Dee, I think Jason is

Dee, I think Jason is learning all about producing a top, quality, steam locomotive with his tooling of the Royal Hudson. If you go on the Rapido website he details the research going into the development of his first steam locomotive.

I am confident he will one day produce a Canadian, 4-6-0  with DCC/Sound which will surpass anything in brass or plastic.

Stay tuned.

Small Steam

I agree with Dave Husman--I would love a good 4-4-0 or 4-6-0.  I wouldn't mind a 2-6-0 or 2-6-2, either

The reality of loco production runs

The less common the locomotive, the less likely right now it will be produced, unfortunately. The good news is once 3D printing quality reaches a fine enough level (it's almost there), then look out. It will become feasible to make just a few locos and make money. It's like what has happened with on-demand printing. It's now possible to sell just one book and make money. Soon, thanks to 3D printing, this will become possible with loco shells. Then all the manufacturers will need to do is make common loco frames that can take different loco shells. A new golden age of road-specific steam locos is about to dawn ...

A good UP 400 series Consolidation

The Bachmann 2-8-0 is kinda close but no cigar as noted by Moe line at the bottom of page 1 of this thread.
