EPT's O Scale blog - Passenger Depot Platform

On my station module I'm having a passenger depot with a platform. The platform is a low platform with its top of the deck at the same height as the top of the rails. The deck will be gravel with stained wood to surround the platform.
Before Easter I started the project of building the platform. I wasn't very pleased with the result. A visit to my parents during easter led me to read one of last years MR that had an article about detaling a passenger depot and commuter stations. I realised that I had to rip up what I had done and redo it.
I ordered scale 4"x4" lumber from kappler and after my exams was done in early June I ripped what I done up, and started cutting the lumber in to approximately 8' lengths, and painted them in a creosote colored stain. I also managed to clue some of the wood down around the area making up the platform.

Fininshing of the wood
Just after I returned from my trip to the US I finished gluing down the wood. I used full strength carpenters white glue to glue the wood in place. I made sure I whiped of all excess glue on the outside of the platform since most of this side will be visible after the scenery is done.
Under are a couple of pictures showing the finished wooden walls.
On this pictures you can see what I ripped up.

End of sections
Since the platform is on to different sections of my station modules I needed to make ends on the sections to get the platform to withstand rough handling. I used 1.5mm styrene from my LHS cut a little lower than the height of the platform (approximately 1mm) to get the final texture to go out on the end.
The end of the section with larger part of the platform.
The other section
The ends were glued to the wood by using Super 7 super glue. After the glue had dried I put spackling compound I had left over from other projects to minimize the amount of gravel I have to put down.
The view of the small part of the platform. This part of the platform is the one I had to redo. Here I only needed the spackling compound on the sides.
On this section I need to have spackling compound on everything to get save the amount of gravel I will use.

I agree!
Keep the photos coming. I love seeing things take shape, and enjoy seeing the larger scales, too.

Almost finished
First of all I'm sorry for the long wait. I finished laying down the "gravel" around four weeks ago and tooks some pictures then. I just didn't managed to get them posted.
Here's a picture of the result
Left now is some light weathering and some toutch up on the styrene at the ends of the sections. The last will be done when I will take them apart.
edit: corrected spelling error

Almost finished? HA!
A layout is NEVER finished, buddy!. There is always something else!.
About the platform, I would just put some loose gravel on the union and replace as needed.
