hello everyone,

i have been looking into a specific train route on the C&NW that passes throught appleton to the north woods of Wisconsin. I can't specify exact locations, but it used to stop in vilas county at least once. Many years before I was born the tracks were torn out and the right of way became the iron horse trail. I would like to know what locomotive and consist would have run on that route, as my grandfather used to ride it to the north woods for my grandma. I already have a singe coach, but what else would have been pulled on that route? It has to be steam because he always said it was a steam locomotive. As he passed recently, I have to turn to the forums. Anyone know anything? Thanks.

The specific train that you

The specific train that you refer to, depending on date, would have been the Northwoods Fisherman, or the Flambeau 400.  "Gogebic", who posts on this site, has an excellent blog on this site, is modeling one of the areas where this train stopped, Hurley WI.

The Flambeau 400 ran up until Amtrak came on the scene in May 1971.   The tracks were ripped up if I recall correctly by 1982.

Following is a link to information on the Flambeau 400:

As far as the route, it ran from Chicago to Ashland, WI.  The line from Green Bay branched off at Eland WI, and went up thru Antigo, Ashland, Woodruff, Hurley / Ironwood, and to Ashland.  The line mostly handled pulpwood, especially in the later years.  If I recall correctly, the C&NW Ashland Division had its headquarters in Antigo WI.  I believe the division office / station still stands in Antigo, and is an apartment building.

The route also handled iron ore from Ironwood to Ashland.  The C&NW had a couple of ore docks in Ashland, but took them out of service in later years, and started using the SOO dock in Ashland.  The SOO ore dock in Ashland was just dismantled in the last couple of years.

Hope this helps.

Check out Gogebic's posts here.  Never met him, but it is some of the best modeling I've ever seen.

That's it.

That's the one. researching confirmed that it would have been pulled by an e2 pacific. I'll try to find one and should have it running in a while. Thanks.
