Checking in from Belleview Florida. This is my first chance to get online, still no power. Unable to do any modeling, but by plugging in my laptap to the generator I was able to watch Mike Confalone videos. Life is slowly starting to return to normal even though Duke says they wont have our power on til Sunday.

Hope all is well

No power is quite an inconvenience! I hope your generator can keep food cold. You didn't mention but is water no problem? Roads? Any damage from stuff thrown in the wind, or fallen limbs or trees?

Every hear we have scares out here in the Pacific and a share of hurricanes. There is no where to "evacuate" so homes and shelters are now required to be substantially stronger built - and a lot more expensive as well.

lucky

We got lucky. just tree limbs down. we do have 5 cases of drinking water. We were told that a water line was ruptured so there is a boil order. As bad as it is there are a lot of people down here that are worse off than I am.

No Power

Sorry to hear about your lack of power. 4.5 million  FPL customers lost their power and at this point we have recovered over 70%. FPL have more than 20,000 employees and contractors on 24/7 restoring power. I know, myself, I left my house the Thursday before the storm to maintain and support the Nuclear power plant during the storm and did not return to the house until last Wednesday. We are still working 7 days a week trying to bring one of the Nuclear units online. Very tiresome but rewarding, seeing the progress that you guys as customers can't see. About 20 % of our employees still don't have power in their own homes and yet they are out here working at the plant. Hopefully all of our customers will get their power very soon.

Solar

Solar electric got very popular here a few years ago and now the introduction of maintenance free batteries has been changing the demand on the utility. We went "off the grid" in 1995 and people thought we were nuts. It seems that places like Florida would be an ideal location to generate your own power.

We also have a backup diesel generator that I run once a month to make sure it works. Very quiet and uses about a quarter gallon an hour. Compared to the 43 cents a kw it pays back quickly.

Glad to hear you are back up and running. Not everybody seems so lucky.

Tropical Storm Maria

It seems that we (South Florida) might have another visitor to come our way in a couple of weeks, Tropical Storm Maria. I guess the shutters are staying up for a while.

Hurricanes

The thing is that storms are like weddings, they start small (tropical storm) and as they travel, they have the tendency to get bigger and bigger.

Checking in and hoping for the best

I just got Internet back--came through without real damge.  I'll take a good old fashioned Nor'Easter over a hurricane any time.  (And in a nor'easter, you can keep the milk good on the back porch!)

Kicking this back up to the top

As we've got more nasty weather hitting the Carribean and approaching the US Mainland, plus a nasty earthquake in Mexico, I thought I'd push this topic back to the first page.

Please remember to keep us informed of your status as you are able.

nasty weather

Just got back this morning from a cruise of the Caribbean, weather was great. The last forecast I saw showed Marie turning and staying in the Atlantic. However news out of Mexico was very sad.
