Looks like a 40 ft reefer?

Maybe Athearn or custom run companies have painted some of the  PFE cars in that paint scheme over the years?  ........DaveB

a quick check on ebay

I see lots of Model power versions,  cheap but don't look very accurate.  There was one completed auction for an Intermountain version, very nice looking, sold  for $12.95 ........DaveB

Those were primarily,

Those were primarily, NRC, bananna reefers used on the IC for movement of fruit from New Orleans ports, north for distribution. When the that business dried up due to bad crops and then trucking, the reefers were used for any perishable/dry freight on the IC particularly, potatoes up in California, Maine and in Canada. The railroad would lease these to other roads for their seasonal movements of fruits, vegtables, canned goods, dairy products and dry freight like magazines . These smaller cars of course were all ice bunker cars (non mechanicals) which also used charcoal heaters in cold weather to prevent freezing. Most of these cars were in their last years when the IC repainted/re-logoed them with the split rail logo replacing the green diamond logo in the late 60s. Larger, 50/60' mechanical reefers replaced these cars in the 50/60s but IC by then had much less perishable business realizing these cars were small and expensive to maintain so they began using other roads and private car companies, mechanical, reefers like ART, SFRC, FGMR, and PFE cars. You could find these cars with both logos into the 70/80s in a few places before they were scrapped due to their age. One final comment about IC reefers is that there was a very short period (70s) when the railroad was the ICG and they trip leased (short duration) about a dozen, 60', mechanical reefers from an unknown car company (possibly PFE) which were re-painted solid orange, lettered ICG and the car number...no logo and used for some customer. I remember seeing a couple of these unusual cars plus a lot of the 40' ones when I hired out on the IC/ICG as a brakeman in the 60s.

I think as far as modeling these reefers I would use a cheap, Athearn, blue box, model, off ebay which are a lite, orange and have the green diamond logo which was more common rather than the modern split rail, one. I also seem to recall Micro Scale making a decal set for reefers including the split rail logo if you wanted to replace the diamond. The Model power cars are the wrong shade of orange (too dark) and is a poor representation of this car.

This probably, way more information than what you were looking for regarding these cars.

Your well informative post

Your well informative post and help is much appreciated dear Barry. That photo was taken on the island of P.E.I back in the mid nineteen-seventies. Someday, I will attempt to model one.

Intermountain makes several Reefer variations

While not that specific IC scheme, they do list an R-40-23 in the earlier IC green scheme, and a handful of ART reefers for other schemes (The Rock Island one might be nice for your layout).

The one I see on ebay completed auction #332342849655, looks like the correct paint scheme. It's probably an older Intermountain run. The box says model #40507-11   Something to look for at least.........DaveB

By coincidence I was

By coincidence I was inventorying my rolling stock and I found one of the Intermountain kits for this car.  It doesn't fit my era, I'm sure I bought it with the intent of re painting it. That's a project I will probably never get to, so if you want it, it's yours. Drop me an email at jrwhite at midwest dot net.

ill be happy to send it to you.

Accurail

Has a steel NRC IC reefer but in an earlier scheme:

They also have data only in orange and yellow if you can find decals for this.

Bob, for models that have

Bob, for models that have molded-on details, they are fine looking kits and I have seen them weathered so well that one would swear the details weren't molded-on.

I don't recall the chap that did this type of weathering; it is somewhere on this site.

...and they offer decals to renumber them, too!

Aside from how nicely detailed Accurail's kits are for cars with molded-on details, and how many of their cars one can bang together in an evening, Accurail offers small decal sheets with a dozen additional car numbers, making it easier to put together a fleet of individual cars.

Well I'm going to have some

Well I'm going to have some time off for xmas so I'm going to start on this kit. I also got some display cases and I'll use one of them to put the kit in when not in use.
