To All: I traded a Florida East Coast Geep for this Bachmann DCC equipped GP38. It came in Chessie paint. I repainted it in Missouri Pacific colors, lettered in Missouri Pacific and weathered the unit with Bragdon Weathering Powders. I added a brass Nathan air horn, spark arrestors, and sun shades. I will later add a fire cracker antenna and Kadee #58 couplers. The locomotive number is incorrect for a MP GP38, but I did not want to renumber the Number Boards, what a pain! The unit will be run on the layout as part of the E. St. Louis Rail Group. Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout.

Sooty

Just for future reference the MP engines were not rusty like that, more of a sooty oily color right over the exhaust stacks and then road grime on the lower portion of the engine.

The only engines that were that rusty color were the GP-15-1's and only on the top of the short hood and the cab roof.  They seemed to rust overnight, but not the rest of the unit.

When I worked for the Mop, I swore they had an "external lubricating system", they'd blow oil out the stack and then let it seep back in through the hood doors.  .  All my shirts had little black spots on the shoulders from the oil drops blown out the stacks when an idling engine revved up.

On the GP-7, 9, 18's the blue would fade badly in patches and the red buzzsaw would be almost white.

Ah, those were the days.

PS:  The exhaust stacks are on sideways.
