Haven't seen this issue raised, but thought I'd ask any way. Is there a easy way to post your pics by the way of a moble device shuch as a cell phone or a tablet? I have a Galaxy G3 smart phone and a Ipod Touch, but no PC yet. Just wondering. Thanks for any help. Eric Graham Lafayette, Indiana

Depends on what/how easy you

Depends on what/how easy you mean. It seems that it always involves a multi-step process.

What's hard about it?

What's hard about it? 1. Press image button on edit bar 2. Select upload tab 3. Press select button and pick image on your device -- press okay 4. Once it uploads, change width to 750 and press ok That's it. It's not THAT hard.

It's also not that easy Joe.  I attempted to upload some last week.  It won't let me select a file it just hangs and won't do anything.

I have a Galaxy J-3 with

I have a Galaxy J-3 with Android it doesn't even show a toolbar when trying to post a comment. Just tbe box to type in. In another forum that I'm in they have the usual comment box and then right under a place where you can automatically uppload pictures. Granted you cant choose where you place your pics at that point but its the easiest way to post pics if you dont have a pc or multi tasking capabilitites. Eric Graham

Its not that hard and it's

Its not that hard and it's not so easy either. I think the biggest issue is that it is pretty well a totally different photo uploading format than pretty well all the other forums and groups out there so the u/i and the steps required to post an image is not that obvious. I've used pretty well all the various posting formats that forums, newsgroups and blogs  have used over the past 20 years...and this one is quite a bit diffrent than the others...plus it is a 5-6 step process. Once you have it figured out and have used it a few times its easy but until then it isn't obvious how to use it.

It's true

I don't usually use my phone for the forums, but I just checked and on my Samsung Galaxy 7 with Chrome, there is no toolbar on the comment box.

The editor is a Drupal module

The editor we use is a Drupal third party plugin and in Googling for issues we find some Android mobile devices reporting problems. There is a newer version of the module available, but we need to research it and to go through an upgrade process to see if it helps. A couple years ago the editor didn't work on mobile at all and we did an upgrade that got it to finally be available on mobile. Just so you know, the upgrade process is a bit involved. First, we need to stand up a test website using the latest version of this site's software, which includes duplicating a 350GB database. Then we need to install the new editor software on the new test site, which involves compiling code and selecting options. Then we install the compiled software and test it ... bugs almost always show up: previous functions break and new functions don't work right or were misconfigured in the compile. Typically several round trips back to compile are needed to finally get the new gen mix right. Once it appears things are finally right, then we need to try more advanced things like uploading images and work out any glitches we find. Once everything looks good and we've made extensive notes of each step of the process, then we will need to take the main site down for an upgrade. The downtime could be an hour or more if we find issues. If we can't resolve the issues then we will have to rollback to the old version and try again later. Meanwhile we go back to the test environment and see if we can replicate the problem in the production environment. Eventually we'll figure it out if this occurs. Keep in mind the MRH site is not like most other forums you visit. They don't have 33,000 subscribers and millions of hits a month nor are they funded by big ad dollars. Our server is large and complex under the hood to be able to support these huge traffic loads. Because our site is so well visited with thousands of ad dollars at stake if we bring it down, we cannot afford to rush into making significant upgrades like this one. I wish we could be as nimble as the little guys, but the software they're using generally won't support the large traffic levels we get. It's the joys of being a very popular larger site that's run on a shoestring. We're lean but we're not so mean when it comes to complex tasks that don't generate immediate income for us. We'll get it fixed, eventually. We'll start working on it. But it will be a back burner project and not likely to be done until early 2018.

iOS devices seem fine, it's some Android devices that are reporting a problem ... so the hope would be the latest version of the editor software would address this problem.

Not Mobile Friendly

Joe;

I almost exclusively use my iPhone 7 for browsing and posting on this forum. Posting a photo is easy but not done easily. The screen does not format based on the device size so the icons and menu do not scale for simple use. Panning and zooming are something to become accustomed to doing but not quite as simple as press-to-copy an image and paste to a post. Uploading a file, rotating, scaling, and inserting can sometimes turn into browsing the folder, sorting by date, etc, etc.

The camera in this phone is amazing so. The portability of the phone and fast connection makes the trade off worthwhile. The groups forum allow a post to be emailed, including photos, so wonder if that is a possible direction for here.

Is this Android issue

Is this Android issue widespread enough to warrant all the hassle to change the system Joe?

Yep, we're not yet mobile-friendly like we want to be ... long story. The mobile-friendly version of the Drupal software is out (version 8, we're on version 6) but the add-on modules we commonly use are not available yet. So we just sit on our hands waiting for the additional modules we need to finally get updated. They will get there eventually, and then we'll upgrade.

That's the way it goes when you use free open source software. You move at the speed the volunteers choose to move. We can easily make MRH free taking this route, but we won't often be able to use the latest tech since as much of our backend as we can get for free, that's what we'll do.

It's the price of free. If we charged for the magazine, we would have more funds and could buy more backend software, or pay programmers to write custom code for us.

When we started MRH, the iPhone had just been out for a year and there was no Android OS. Two years in, the iPad was introduced and the smartphone craze started along with the new Android OS arriving. Here we are eight years in now and mobile devices have become THE WAY many of you frequent our site. Meanwhile, the truly mobile-savvy version of Drupal core (the free open source software we use to power this site) only came out last year. The add-on modules generally take a couple years to finally all get updated.

Thanks!

By the way, I am not complaint about free. Just a little inconvenient. If it helps pay the bills then I would be happy to subscribe as a paying member but, frankly, I like the ads and don't mind the futzing with posts. Besides, it doesn't really make sense for MRH to pay for software to support a free site. Understood.

Thanks for the explanation. When it finally is updated there will be something else to consider. Would you consider making the MRH app push to the Apple Watch? (LOL).

Android and photo uploads/missing toolbar

If you want to make a post on an Android device that needs photos included I simply do a "request desktop version" in my Samsung Galaxy S5 stock Android web browser. The page will reload and the toolbar appears, allowing me to upload/select photos in my post. Just make sure you don't have half a post written or you might lose it while switching to desktop mode. I typically will do a "select all" followed by a "copy" operation first before making the switch.

Simple resize

My iPhone has ( had?) an app called Simple Resize. It took any mobile photo and brought it down to the 720 size. It unfortunately is not being updated by the developer.

Success on Android!

8_132010.jpg

Okay this image was posted from my Chrome on my Samsung Galaxy S7 using the request desktop version trick.

The "view desktop version" option is under the 3 dots menu in the top right of the screen.

It works.
But it is kind of painful trying to navigate the screen and dialog boxes.
