Hello When Proto 2000 did their Alco FA-1 and FA-2 models a number of years ago, did they use the same tooling for both the FA-1 and FA-2 or was it actually different? If yes, was the FA-1 or the FA-2 used for the base tooling?

Different bodies

I am   not a toolmaker or casting expert, but the bodies are different so I am not sure. At the least the molds would need modification. I believe making molds today is much less expensive than years ago. I would guess the bodies were from different molds although the chassis are the same I believe. I have FA2 sets ABAs of the NYC, & LV as well as NH ABA  FA1s

FA-1 vs FA-2

The FA-2 is two feet longer than the FA-1. The FA-2 radiator shutters are shorter than the FA-1 and moved further forward.

I have both the Proto FA-1 & FA-2 & the FA-2 is noticeably longer so both the body & chassis are different.

If I remember correctly the Proto FA-2 was produced first and had that funky radiator fan that was powered off of the drivetrain.

Alco FA's

Hi Blane--When you do get your hands on a Proto FA-1, in addition to the prototype differences cited here, you will quickly see the differences in the model work. The Proto FA-2 was a landmark model when introduced and filled a huge void. The Proto FA-1, introduced several years later, was an exquisite example of the tool and die makers' art. It is an excellent model.

Have any of you guys installed winterization hatches on them?

I’m looking for roof photos to help figure out where/how best to implement these Miniatures by Eric brass castings on both A and B units.

FA-1 versus FA-2

Externally longer frame on the FA-2. Radiators and fan housing moved . Battery boxes on the FA-2 under the cab floor versus under the frame on the FA-1. Length was added for possible steam generator use and water/fuel capacity. Even though they look the same the windshields and all cab doors are different and not transferable from one to the other.
