I have never posted any photos of my models before so I figured I would finally do so.

There has been a lot of talk the last several years about the Intermountain SD40-2, including several threads here and I figured I would add to that. With a lot work I am finally coming down the home stretch on an ex Conrail Norfolk Southern SD40-2. Many scratch built parts to match prototype photos and a fully detailed chassis highlight this diesel. Interesting notes include the Southern style sun shade on the conductor side and a standard sun shade on the engineer side. A modified nose and dozens upon dozens of decals have been added as well.

Then I have recently completed a heavily weathered Exact Rail Canadian Pacific gondola. The weathering was done with powders and oils along with hand done graffiti.

Pardon the picture quality I am still practicing. Enjoy and have a great day.

Gon

Sadly, the gon looks pretty prototypical.

Very nice!

I like it. I'm not a diesel guy, but it's still pretty cool!

Oh, and welcome to the forum! (nice work on the Gon, BTW.... I've seen a few out here in San Diego that kinda look like that, with the squiggly graffiti, rather than the "works of art" style you typically see on models... very prototypical!)

Thanks fellas

@ dave1905 - It seems that most modern gondolas look like it. It is one of my better weathering jobs. @ Warflight - Thank you for the props on both the diesel and gon. It was fun putting all the hand "spray can" graffiti on. Shane

Question....

Very nice work, Shane. I hope you continue to post your work on the forum.

How did you do the white graffiti on the gon? Did you brush paint it or did you use a paint pen? If it is a paint pen, what kind is it cuz I've been struggling to find a good technique to recreate the look you achieved.

Thanks for your help......Nick

Nice!

Very nice!

Love the gon and are you going to dirty the diesel up a bit or leave her shiny and new?

Answers

Thank you so much guys for the kind words.

@ Acuransx15 - I first weathered the car so that it appeared that the graffiti was painted over the rust and dings, dullcoated the car, then I used a Sharpie paint pen with the micro tip to make the graffiti using various online sources as a reference. Then once dry I used weathering powders again to age the graffiti, and lastly another light coat of dull coat. Lastly the trucks and wheels were painted and weathered and that's it.

@ Wabash Banks - The SD40-2 is next. As soon as I add a chain tensioner, bell, and, air filter to the conductor side the rust , dirt, and dull coat will be added.

New York Albany & Susquehanna SD40-2

Here is a picture of my home road the New York Albany & Susquehanna. This is an Athearn undecorated RTR SD40-2 with Cannon and Co. cab, nose, fans, radiator screens, turbo hatch, etc, and many additional details. Jim from Highball graphics printed my decal design. Next NYAS project will be GP40-3 - slug set based on Norfolk Southern practices. I have done several freight cars as well.

Thanks........One More Question

Thanks for the clarification, Shane. Have you had trouble with the white paint running when you use the Sharpie paint marker? Also, was the paint pen you used water or oil-based? Thanks.         -----------Nick

Paint Pen

Nick, The paint pens I use are oil based. I had a few times where a little too much paint came out but I found through the learning curve that by paying attention to the amount of paint at the tip I would dab the pen on a paper towel if I had to. Additional weathering with oils and powders tended to help resolve any miscues. I hope that helps Shane

White graffiti

If you need thin white lines a gel pen will work but they are not waterproof so need some dull coat over them before getting the car wet :> ) ......DaveB

Faded UTLX LPG tank

Just completed this UTLX LPG tank car this evening. Kadee no. 118 couplers, microscale conspicuity stripes, weathering to fade and dull the paint, and hand done graffiti have all been added. Second photo shows the weathering to the trucks. Enjoy and have a great day.
