To All: The Detroit & Mackinaw Rwy started out as a 3"2" gauge logging line and was in business under that moniker from 1894 until 1992. The line was originally called the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena. and was converted to standard gauge in 1886. The "Turtle Line" main business was timber and limestone but later became a common carrier with gypsum another main commodity transported. The Bay City to Cheboygan, Michigan line had 375 miles of track by 1925 and in 1976 the D&M acquired the old Michigan Central (NYC) line from Bay City-Gaylord-Mackinaw City. Today the original D&M is a part of the Lake State Rwy. I scratch built, painted and lettered this Early Rail boxcar. Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. St. Louis Rail Group Layout.
