To All: The Miskatonic Railroad is the fictional pike of John Ott based on the fictional town of Arkan in Essex County, Massachusetts. His structures are based on H.P. Lovecraft's Chhulhu Mythos and his pike is designed to operate at night, with all the buildings lite. The railroad is set in the 1882-1907 time frame. I painted, lettered and weathered this "What If" boxcar to honor this famous model railroad. I did use the existing lettering on the left side of the car. Herald copy work and photo by Elvin Howland. NICE!

I love the Cthulhu Mythos, and I'm going to be adding a car from either the Miskatonic Railroad, or perhaps the Salem and Miskatonic...haven't decided which.  That railroad is a source of inspiration.

The Salem and Miskatonic does have a drawback then you use initials in the same manner asthe Boston & Maine.

A bit of fantasy!

In this modeling world of prototype this, and prototype that, I LOVE seeing the bits of fantasy. Great realistic layouts, especially, that don't follow any prototypes, but rather, what ifs, and fantasy, and literature, or even movies. I love imagination. (and I'm especially a Lovecraft fan... those were the stories we weren't allowed to read as kids, that I simply ate up as an adult)

I think this is why my railroad is a Hollywood set, rather than a prototype railroad... and some day, I WILL build a "Steam Punk" module. After all... movie sets film Science Fiction all the time! As for operations on a Hollywood set? Well, of course there would be. One never knows what movie is being filmed, and why not a Hollywood set, with active rail, that gets equipment delivered by rail due to it's remote location, and the eccentricities of the property owners who allow very little modern equipment on set?
