I have decide to use https://imgur.com for hosting and sharing pics here and elsewhere.  To make it work on forums once you upload your picture, right click on the picture you want to place on the forum. When the menu opens , select copy image address. This is what you paste into the URL spot for sharing your pics..

Have you considered just uploading your images directly to the MRH site?

Photobucket replacement...

I was just about to test my deviantyART to see if I could use it to replace Photobucket. (going from free to $400? Way to kill a web site, Photobucket!)

This is a test... this is only a test...

If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information.

Oops... wait... that was my other job...

Okay, so... deviantART Though I have a paid account (I do photography professionally) they have free accounts, you can upload there, and share here, without having to pay Photobucket a ransom.

Use "scraps" if you just want to share somehwre else... use just the regular galary if you want strangers to comment on your art. (oh... and add me! Mine is warflight.deviantart.com  )

Personal preferences

Personally, I preefer to share an image here, rather than post here, so that all of the hundreds of images being posted aren't filling up the MRH servers.

Me too

I'd prefer not to jam MRH with my stuff.  Just my opinion.

MRH Preference

I seem to recall that Joe F. prefers that folks load their images on the MRH servers (though he obviously doesn't demand it).  The reason was to keep the archived posts intact.  If an individual closes or loses an account that contains his images, then the post(s) that contain his images now no longer have the images.  If the images are on the MRH server, then the post(s) will always remain intact.

Posting here is our preference

Yes, that is right. We give each user 128MB of space (super users get 256MB) and by posting your web-optimized images here, it's easier to make sure the threads stay intact and images don't go bye-bye. We have a number of older otherwise useful threads that now look like swiss cheese because the off-site storage of the images is no longer available.

The other option is to use something like a Google Drive to store your images and then just use a share URL to post the image here. Google Drive gives you 15GB free ... it will take you a LONG TIME to use up that much space with images if you optimize them for the web before uploading them.

Okay... posted it directly... there was about five seconds worth of learning curve there, but, yeah... okay, posting direct is a bit easier!

Now that we know it's preferred, well... and knowing is half the battle!

Swiss cheese

Joe,

I think were going to see a exponential increase in Swiss cheese threads pretty quick here if what I'm hearing is right. They are doing this a little bit at a time. I am not relishing the moment when they are done blocking everyone. Its going to trash old threads everywhere...

Guy.

Mine are probably trashed...

I haven't looked yet, but I already got the e-mail from them, wanting $399 for a subscription for me to share my images. If mine are trashed (I haven't looked yet) I plan to pull every one of my images, and close the account. I only had the account so I could post images here, and at the Bachmann board.

Remember, when closing your Photobucket, to pull all of your images... they will continue to use your images for their own promotions, keep in mind.

"Give us your art, so we have a web site, and pay us for using your art!"

Yeah... great business model.

...

This exact same scenario killed photopoint about a decade back, and in direct consequence spawned photobucket.  Nobody substantial is going to pay photobucket $400 a year of photohosting services.

Learning from the past...

Some websites are simply doomed to never learn from past mistakes!

I don't worry about MRH though... as far as I know this is the first free, online only model train magazine... there are no past mistakes to learn from! It'll alwaye be SMOOTH sailing here!

Several Options

There are several options out there.  Just remember, like Photo Bucket, rules and pricing can always change for any photo hosting site.

Google provides free storage options and is easy to use.  When selecting a hosted storage provider, do the research on the company first.

@ Joe

With that in mind, perhaps in a new version of the forum ( I think it was brought up a while back), By default, adding a picture would go to each users account? Using outside sites would be an alternative.. I don't know if that is possible with the software used..but I thought I should make mention. I thought posting a notice of the preferred method of posting pictures might be of some use (permanent notice) , it seems some may not read it.

Edit :  on the Blog posts that I did how to stuff.. I went back and replaced the pics / uploaded to server..no swiss cheese for those. I was able to get most of my pics from Photobucket..

Pet peeve

I would normally say that this really p***** me off but I'm on good behavior on this (my favorite) site. I honestly wish that this and all other forums required photos be directly posted to the site. I have learned so much here through the search function but when I'm searching a trail of info on a technique and the photos are missing it is such a waste of time.

This place is the ABSOLUTE BEST source of information on innovative, current model railroading techniques available anywhere. Let's keep it that way so it continues to grow and become the defacto destination for information on model railroading.

There's Google Photos

There is also Google Photos ... lots of free storage (15 GB). You get *unlimited* storage if you use Google's hi-res JPG format. Just google: Google Photos.

Why not HD's?

After looking at the various "free" online photo storage services, my solution was to buy a 4TB hard drive.  The logic was:

1. "Free" only refers to the financial cost, not the terms of use.  See Photobucket overnight "coup".

2.  Photo format can be as desired, i.e., RAW, TIFF, or JPEG.  See Google limits.

3.  Avoids problems associated with small operations.  Love MRH, but Joe is an uniquely talented and visionary proprietor who would be hard to replace if something happens.  (Yes, photos posted and saved on MRH are all first saved on the HD.)

4. The HD has enough space to back up my whole computer, including all my CAD layout designs, as well as multi-thousands of photos.

5. And, yes, some backups also go to Apple servers.  Belt and suspenders seems a valid strategy in earthquake country as well as for devices like HD's.

It’s probably too late now

It’s probably too late now, but maybe somebody could throw together a script to scan all of the forum posts looking for photobucket URLs, download the associated photo to another server, and replace the URL (Obviously someone inside MRH with the appropriate access would need to run it). Also probably not legal, but it’s easier to apologize than ask permission, and would avoid the “swiss cheese” problem. I used photobucket for hosting photos, but any posts I’ve made are probably nothing anyone would miss, so I’m not bothered by it, and it was always in the back of my mind that something like this could happen and there would be nothing I could do about it. Regarding for the advice to delete your photos from photobucket to spite them - it’s probably not worth the trouble. I’m sure the terms of service say that they own anything you uploaded there, even if you subsequently delete it and cancel your account. Just because you delete the photo doesn’t mean it isn’t still on their servers somewhere. The people most impacted of course are the forum owners. They depend on free content from their users to attract other users, and “swiss cheesed” content isn’t very attractive. So if you want to support MRH, it’s probably best to upload your web-optimized photos here (assuming your posts are more worthwhile than mine). As for people who use free photo-hosting in web stores or auction postings - oops. Welcome to internet reality. Trying to run a business without understanding the fine print is probably not a good idea.

I post photos here on MRH and link them to other sites.  People here get a free preview of what I have posted and I can relink and show off my work at other locations too.
