Mark Dance

Hi all...

I was fortunate to attend SuperTrains in Calgary a few weeks back to speak about the move of Brian Pate's KMR layout to Dawson City.  I was doubly fortunate to be able to spend a very enjoyable afternoon with Grant Eastman and his stunning Southern Alberta Rail layout.  Grant's work has been published and I have been a fan of his work for a long time.  I also got to operate on the SAR several years ago as part of the Northern Rails 2014 op event and it was truly unique experience.

With Grant's blessing I have posted two videos: one an "interview" with him about his layout design objectives and the second a video following a train over the line discussing his modeling techniques.

I hope you enjoy these videos as much as I enjoyed shooting them.

1) Introduction

2) Tour the SAR

Beautiful work...

Great video, Mark! Grant's scenery to track ratio is proof that less is more. The layout is a masterpiece.

For those interested, Grant has a website devoted to the SAR: http://southernalbertarail.com/index.php?page=home

Cheers!

SAR

Outstanding layout and videos Mark!  But you two need to take this hobby a little more seriously.

I love the way Grant operates, and the thought he's put into immersing his operators into the experience.  Even if he has to put up with occasional heckling from the videographer.

Exceptionally well done on his part and yours.  Thanks very much for sharing these.  I really enjoyed them.

One thing not covered in the

One thing not covered in the video is how realistic the scenery is on Grant's layout, there are lots of areas that look exactly like the prototype. I've been lucky to take part in a few op sessions on the SAR, and to date it is the only layout I've operate on where the trains actually crawl on the grades due to the phyisical weight. The train may be moving at a scale 10 mph with the Digitrax throttle set at 99, proof that pushers are needed on the railroad!
