Having fun playing with lighting and the fact that many of my structures have yet to be fixed in place... http://www.petercgraham.com

One lit building

I have one lit building so far... a saloon. I know electric lighting isn't period for the Old West (which I'm modeling) but I'm going more for a Hollywood Wild West, than prototype (but there will be some historical stuff as well) which allows me to add a few lights in buildings (trying to keep it looking like oil lamps) lights in passenger cars, and I want to do a few gas or oil lamps on the streets (like in the town from the John Wayne movie "The Shootist"... sheriff says they will be getting a trolley next year!)

I'm planning a DCC layout, but because I have a bunch of old Bachmann DC power packs, I have been considering running all of my layout's lighting using those. Some lights on the accessory side (solid lighting) and some on the "track power" side of the controller (so I can dim the lights in those blocks) I figure it will save me a bit of money in the long run, and I figured, since you seem to know what you're doing with lighting (judging by that AMAZING model you have pictured there) that you might have some opinions, or suggestions.

Thanks Warflight but you may

Thanks Warflight but you may be only slightly behind me in this endeavour. I've got a couple of old dc transformers that I'm planning to power my lighting as well. I'm experimenting with these LEDs.

I know they are available as bright white and yellow (which may be closer to what you need for kerosene lamps or candle light) and I'm pretty sure the more knowledgeable among this crowd will be able to point you toward controllers that will allow you to mimic flickering lights.

best of luck!

Ooh! Flickering!

I never even considered flickering lights!

Welp... you did it now... I just know I'm about to go broke lighting things! Heh.

Flickering lights

I am not sure of the source, but there should be something available to make flickering lights, look for campfire light, because that used to be available as a kit to make a campfire or hobo fire scene.

Camp Fires

Will do!

Damn, I was at the local train shop today, and didn't even think about lights. They have a nice selection here too, including those ones I keep seeing that has the individual plugs... forget who makes them... (trying to get a DCC engine working right... MRC decoder, and on my track, it has two speeds... warp speed, and stop... at the shop, it worked just fine... they did some adjustments anyway... get it home... warp speed, or stop. It's the ONLY decoder out of my 5 that does this... the rest work fine... so... I was a bit distracted today)

More flickering lights

First, great photo/scene Peter.

I would suggest checking out Evan Designs at the link below. They have a campfire and a welding kit that might be what you're looking for.  Plus some decal paper that looks interesting, too.
