Hi MRH,

I wanted to share a quick how-to for making security cameras. These are modeled after the older style cameras commonly seen.

Parts:

0.040 styrene for the base

a staple for the arm

a piece of 0.060 round rod styrene for the camera body (spare parts, plastic sprue, or tubes work too!)

a piece of paper for the camera hood

clear lens for the camera glass( I had some small lens left over from a switch stand kit)

The base measures 6x6 scale inches. The camera is about 16 scale inches long with the hood about 3 scale inches longer.

I colored the back of the lens with a black sharpie and painted the camera white.

These are quick and easy to make. My paint jobs leave something to be desired though.

Thanks for Reading!

Here's a layout update...

rk%20(4).JPG

Painted the new road section, ballasted the new track section, added stripes to that new phone pole, and put in a new parking lot (weights on til the glue dries).

Was thinking about using this tape for my freight cars to add the striping on the sides. Here's the test car:

This is yellow duct tape from the 99 Cent Store. Thoughts?

Nice detail

Great idea, these kind of details really make a scene or structure!

Nice Cameras! and about the reflective tape

Very nice job on those cameras. They look perfect (maybe off white would be a better color). Brings back memories of a time when one of those cameras followed me, so I waived at it and it 'waved' back (the operator rapidly raised and lowered it a few times in acknowledgment of my wave).

As to the yellow reflective striping, the tape looks good, , but that requirement for the yellow striping is relatively recent and that 40' boxcar would have been long gone (if you want to be that strict on such things).

????

Cameras look great.  I ordered a piece of 3m yellow reflective tape off eBay.  Got a little roll of it that I can cut up and probably do a 100 cars or so. Cost like .50 cents.  Took maybe two weeks to arrive but for price and real 3m tape, fine with me.  Oh and it was free shipping.  Don't know how that makes sense but thank you China

Very Creative

A great detail for my Industrial area and can't beat the price of that Security camera. Thanks for sharing.

Reflective tape.

I picked up a roll of 1/16" pin stripping tape, but I might use the finger nail art tape I got.  It's small, closer to the size of HO scale 3", as rules say.  There also is a rule on spacing of the tape, and length.  But, no need for that on your box car  ,

The cameras look great!

Mike.
