Very cool

Awesome shot of a great engine - basically an RS-1, with no short hood. I wonder why it was only one unit rather than a pair...

Yep, essentially an RS-1

It's surprising that they were able to replace the J-1 Mikados with these on these trains, but I suspect it was declining traffic, and instead of eliminating a pair of trains, they just handled fewer cars on each one. 

Could the NH S-2s MU? I don't recall offhand, but I suspect not. Since I have New Haven Power right here...only #0609 had any MU capability, for the DT-1 slug at the Hartford hump. Although Wikipedia lists the S-2s tractive effort as 57,500 lb, and the J-1s were 45,535 lb which means they were actually an increase and wouldn't be necessary.
