Larry of Z'ville

Of living in our post retirement "Dream" house, the wife and I are moving to Florida.  Our house here in Indy sold in three days without being on the market.

The new "dream" house will be about half the size of the Indy house.  My train area will be a quarter of the current one or less.  Should I switch to N scale?

So many trains, so little time,

Why ?

First, welcome to Florida, if you are moving to South Florida look me up, I live in the Ft Lauderdale area.

Why change scale, you will be surprise what you can do in a small area.

Holes in the walls

Each room could be a division and just go from room to room (just kidding!).    The detail and good running characteristics of today's N scale stuff would be tempting.  Russ

More Than Just Size

My first question would be can you work with the smaller size?  Started out modeling N-Scale and when I started to need reading glasses it was not as fun anymore so switched to HO.

Then you have to ask yourself what are your layout interest?  Can't live without running long trains and mega-operations?  Than N-Scale may be the way to go.

Otherwise, you can build some nice HO layouts in small spaces.

So, before selling off the HO stuff, I would review your interest and draw up various plans for the space you have.

The question is why or not

Joe, Nick and Russ,

thanks for the input.

We have decided on the Villages, South of Ocala.  I am still going to deal with HO, anticipating some club activity plus other stuff.  The N scale will be the "room" set up, what ever that is.  I was contemplating doing a TOMA project In HO.  Now am tossing around size.

I had my cataracts remove last summer.  I can see details on the small items again.

I'd wait

Until you are moved in and settled before deciding.  BTW, I live about an hour from the Villages in Apopka and go there to visit a friend and also to attend the train shows.

If you want a lot of railroad in a small space N is the way to go. N scale today looks good and runs very well. If you enjoy more of a switching layout HO might be a better choice.

An engineer by

Education.  I think 10 times then cut once.  We decide on the house in early May.  They build in 4 months, supposedly without fail.  So early September is when we might be in the house.  What I can do now is contemplate and possibly order shelf units and other stuff.  An idea of bench work placement will be helpful.  Have several ideas, will discuss later.

Test

Larry when we moved my space went down to a 10 x 10 ft room. I thought seriously about N scale also. In the end I gave myself a test. If I could scratch build a fairly complex structure in N scale I would make the switch. No go, not because of my eyes but because it is just too small to work with for me.

So what are your favorite things about the hobby and can you do those in N?

Jack
