HO track help

I have an N scale display and I was given an HO scale train set. I would like to expand and add the HO to my display but when I try to run the train it goes maybe a foot then stops. this happens whether in forward or reverse. I've cleaned the tracks and the wheels and it has the plastic insulated joiners. It's an old set so I'm not sure what to do with it. The engine is a bachmann santa fe 307. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like internal contact problems

Sounds like internal contact problems. When a loco ages, the internal contacts can oxidize, making the loco run poorly, if at all. Take the shell off and examine the current path. Also use a continuity meter to find where the poor connection is. Another possibility is cracked gears. To check that out, take the loco gear towers completely apart and look for problems. You may be able to order replacement parts from Bachmann.

Perhaps I'm way off base

but you mentioned you are using the plastic insulated rail joiners.  Are these what join each piece of track?  If so, you'll need to feed each piece of track or there won't be any power past the insulated rail joiners.  If I'm way off here, I apologize, I just don't know why you mentioned specifically the plastic insulated rail joiners unless you were using them.

HO track help

thanks for your replies, I appreciate the input. I mentioned the insulated joiners because I just put them on and I've never used them before. Didn't know it that could be the problem. i'm still pretty new at this so I'm kinda flying blind. Thanks again.

Yeah, use metal joiners if you have them

Then you'll only need the one set of track feeders unless you've got more than six feet of track, then you should feed the rail every 6 feet or so.
