Hi all,

I'm looking for any thoughts or suggestions for the most recent version of my HO logging layout ( the first version is at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/28454 ).

The area is based on British Columbia / 1930-40, with inspiration taken from a few logging lines of the Pacific Northwest especially the Capilano Timber Co. which ran out of North Vancouver. I wanted to model a point-to-point plan including a logging camp with a few facilities, log trains running through tree-filled terrain and a dirty, industrial port area.

The room is 14 x 22. Even though I am 6'5", I wanted to keep reach access easy so have kept most of the depth to a 2 foot reach. Compared to the first layout I flipped a few things around and simplified the port/industrial area. There are several points where I can run an extension into the next room for staging including coming off the wye.

For the port area, I am taking inspiration from Granville Island, a man-made island situated in Vancouver harbor, that was packed full of industrial manufacturers that supplied logging and sawmill related goods. A lot of the buildings are perfect for doing background flats.

Long reach

Looks like a very long reach into the logging camp, 30-36" to the back track.

What happens at the "transfer tracks"?

What happens at the "logging camp"?  What is the building the tracks go into?

Seems like a lot of route miles to get to a skidder that will let you load 2 cars.

Somehow the steel & wire, donkey shop and foundry, seem disconnected from the rest of the theme.  There might be occasional loads up to the logging area but a single switch move from the foundry to the donkey shop isn't that much and anything "export"  looks like it would go out via the wharf, which is literally outside teh door of both companies, why would they need rail access?  Maybe the Wharf staging track is also a connection to the outside world.

Overall it looks like a very scenic railroad, should be beautiful scenery.  Looks like maybe a crew of 3-4 crews and maybe a dispatcher/agent

thanks for your thoughts. It's true the reach by the logging camp is deep, but luckily I will have access with a large hatch on the back wall when needed there.

I will admit that the "modeling" part is my first love, which probably shows in some of my operational ignorance. The transfer tracks are there to allow the small geared locos to drop off their loaded cars from the landing to the transfer tracks where a rod engine can come down the line (from the staging area behind the logging camp) and pick up the cars for the trip to the log dump, and return the empty cars to the tracks where the geared loco can pick them up for the run to the site. It really is an area for drop-off and pick-up for the logging cars.

The logging camp building is a engine shed with mechanical facility, the camp is kind-of, very-reduced version based on Rayonier's Railoroad Camp. I do realize I will need longer tracks around the skidder landing to get more cars there.

The types of industries around the port are just place holders at the moment, it will take me a while before I get to that part and I know this things will tweak and change by the time I get around to the port area. But the area that is the inspiration for me (Granville Island) had rail and harbor access, but I get your operational thought. And yes, the wharf staging is my link to the outside world that will allow me to run some other cars through.
