Crayola has discontinued the dry powder paint I show in my scenery videos 4 & 5.

Read on for alternative sources!

Good alternative to Crayola

Since Crayola has phased out their line of dry powder colors, here's a good alternative ...

Get black, brown, yellow, and blue. With these four colors you can mix any of the mixtures I show in the videos.

Another source of powder paint in New Zealand

Here's another source of powder paint that I've discovered: FAS Powder paint from New Zealand. You can get it in small jars or large tubs.

Remember, the colors you want are: black, brown (umber), yellow, and blue (ultra blue).

Their brown looks to be less red than mine, so also get some red and mix a brown that's 1 part red to 2 parts umber. If it's a rust brown color, you've got it about right.

How about the FAS brand of tempera paint?

Joe,

I noticed on your Siskiyou forum that you mentioned the FAS product in New Zealand, have you actually used it or had you only just found them through a search?  Being in Australia it will be alot easier for me to source some from New Zealand than from the states.

PS: You a clearly writing this at the same time!

Cheers,

Jason...

How do they work and how long does a supply last?

HOW THEY WORK
With the plaster included in the mix, these powders have a built-in binder, so I use them for just about everything where a dusty weathered look is what I'm after. Just a mist of water and once they set up, the powder is permanent.

HOW LONG DOES A SUPPLY LAST?
One quart-sized jar of dry powder pigment when mixed at my typical formula amounts with plaster should do a small to medium-sized layout. If you want to be safe, get two jars of the black and brown, since those are the colors you will use the most.

You'll probably need two jars of each color for a large layout -- and get three jars of the black and brown. This is about what I've used on my Siskiyou Line.

MORE THAN JUST DIRT - YOU CAN WEATHER WITH IT TOO
Also keep in mind you can use the plaster powder mixes I show in my video to weather locos and rolling stock, structures -- you name it! A mist of water will fix the weathering in place more permanently, although it will still wear off over time with a lot of handling. If you expect to handle the item a lot, then you need to apply a fixative over the weathering - and the fixative will greatly subdue the weathering, so plan accordingly: in other words, significantly over-weather a piece you intend to apply fixative to.

Also the misting with water will cause the weathering to be more subdued than it looked when dry. If you want a really dirty weathering application, after you mist the area or car with water, apply the color to the wet surface.

Haven't used them

Jason:

Haven't used FAS - just googled to find sources for dry powder pigment. I've used a half-dozen different sources over the years and have yet to find any powder pigments that *don't* work, so I would expect FAS pigments to work as well.

However, it would be good for someone to order a couple small containers of their black and brown/umber and report back to us on here!

You might also want to order some of their brilliant red and make a brown that's 1 part red to 2 parts umber. My brown I use is more of a rust brown - so it's got a lot of red in it. If you want your color mixes to match mine, you need a red-brown, not a chocolate brown which is what their umber probably is.

As part of my research for my article, I'll probably order some FAS colors and experiment with them as well.

Consider it done...

Joe,

As I need some to start the scenery base and final track/ballast weathering for our module, and for the future layout I will order some tomorrow.  As a small thank you for the help provided by MRH and fellow modellers, I will do a report/article for you and the masses on how it works and finally looks...

Stay tuned.

Cheers,

Jason...

That's the kind I use, Joe.

That's the kind I use, Joe.  They work great, but don't make the mistake of geting their dust-free version -- it won't work.

I'm not aware if there is a difference between the various tempera powered paints as applied to MRR  but  I found a few more sources  for  Power tempera paint.

An Ebay source for the stuff. Someone on Ebay is also selling by the case for 14.00$ but the color selection is modest, but Black and orange they have.

And another source, from downunder...

Hey Joe and all,

I have found another source here in Australia for the powdered tempera paint.  The company here in Victoria has all the required colours and a nice assortment of quantities to choose from.  The best part is that they offer a large box of 53oz (1.5kg) which by Joe's calculations should do a medium to large layout.

They offer a 9oz (250g), 18oz (500g), 53oz (1.5kg), 141oz (4kg) and a 282oz (8kg)...

18oz (500g) shown below:

Prices are quite reasonable and are better value than the FAS product, I paid $8.61au for each container, $43 for all five colours.  The larger 53oz (1.5kg) sells for $18.47au and the biggest box at 282oz (8kg) sells for $69.06au.

Cheers,

Jason...

Always wanted to try them out!

Joe,

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on the sources and supplies.  I was just watching 4 & 5, as I'm itching to start doing scenery on my layout... will have to pick up some of the "new" tempera paints at Dick Blick.com .

I finally placed my order to try them Last night

I ordered 2 Black 1 Brown, 1 Blue, 1 Yellow, last night when I was tired from working in the heat all day Dumb move!

It will be the first time I have used Tempera Powder to color my layout. Since I wanted to try Joes System that was on his Videos I decided to get these Fresco tempra powders.

Looking at my order today I realized I had hit the wrong box and instead of 2 Black I ordered 2 white. I called the company toll free number to see if they would change the order to 2 Black instead of 2 white. The lady I talked to said my order was shipped at 08:00 this morning and it was now 12:35 so I ordered 2 black from her and asked if I could ship the 2 whites back she said no problem and that I would have to pay shipping and since the Powdered paint is only $3.90 each and it cost $6.90 shipping I will just keep the white and ue it mixed with some blue for my back drop in the 2nd room.

Don't place orders when your half asleep it will cost you. Oh well I should know better!

Bought mine at Michael's

The brand name was Funstuff, but they seem about the same as the powders Joe uses as far as the mixes go.  Used them on several occasions and have been happy with the results.

FAS Powder...

I would like to thank Joe for the link to FAS powder paint from New Zealand, being from NZ I found this very convenient, now all I need to do is figure out how to stop my mix from turning out pink! Don’t worry (as if anyone is) I’ll get it right … soon I hope.

More black

To kill any pink, try adding more black. Also, you can try adding a little yellow and blue in equal parts (makes green, which will move pink more toward gray).
