Started investigating wood Howe Truss bridge kit options for my layout. I looked at kits on the internet and searched the forums, and then I came across Black Bear Scale Models. They offer a template system and then kit packs of wood and other bits to build them. So I figured out cost wise you make an initial template buy then all you had to buy was more wood bundles. Comes with rod and bolt details also.

The template comes with full size drawings and instructions. I recently learned they now offer the full size drawings alone if you don't want the template and wish to scratch build. I personally found the template quite handy for building these. The other thing that was really good about these kits is your not locked into one length of bridge. You can build a king or queen post bridge or out to a long truss bridge.

Alright so on with the pictures...

First pic is of what I received with my initial purchase. The template comes with your first wood package, and I purchased another bundle of wood.

Instructions seem pretty good, and you need to pay attention to the drawings also.

I would cut the stock first then stain it with some walnut stain. Also cut your bottom chords longer than you need, then you can fine tune the length later when you test fit.

Next pic here is the side plate assembly in the jig.

working on the other side plate here. I trimmed the angle on the top cord after they had dried.

Next is to line the side plates up and start installing the floor beams. I used a piece of graph paper taped down to some foam core to keep the 14' inside clearance lined up. You can also see in this pic where I had filed the angle on the top chord.

First few floor beams in place. Keep check on your side plates that they don't bow out like the left one is here in this first pic. Had to readjust it before laying the other floor beams.

Most of the beams in place and the two middle bottom chords installed. You need to put these in place before cutting the floor beams that are between the upright posts or they tend to drop.

Bottom shot.

First one assembled.

Another angle.

Installed on layout.

Picture of the Piers installed on one of the others I built. You can see the bolt details in this also.

Rod and bolt detail. its a bit blurry.

Pic of two of the others I've built.

I only had to buy one more wood bundle and was able to complete four bridges I needed for my layout as three of them are short. I think I spent less than $100 including my stain. Hope y'all enjoyed this and helps others out there.
