I have always wanted to build a dual track mobile hot metal mixing car ever since I seen pictures of the model that Peachcreek shops has. I was also able to find patent plans for this car online. It may not follow the plans 100% but I built it for the area I have for the car. I'm waiting on a break in the weather to paint the car.

Excellent work, being dual track that car is huge.  Did they use one locomotive to pull it, or one on each track?

One locomotive

One locomotive was used, but the car also has traction motors that got there power from that one locomotive. The locomotive had to have a special connection to the car so power could be sent to the traction motors. According to the information on the car it weighted it at 660 tons when loaded.

What company/location utilized that car?

Hey Donald,

Great work.  Where was the prototype mixing car operated?

None built

Thanks Ted,

None was ever built, it was just proposed by Pecor for USS Conneaut plant in Ohio. A Patent was did on the car and can be found by looking for Mobile Hot Metal Mixing car.

Nice--a couple of questions

I'm surprised that it has only one coupler on each end--isn't that limiting how locomotives can couple up.

Are you going to include any turnouts, or does this car simply move back and forth?

NICE car, and I'm looking forwards to seeing more of it.

Thanks

The track on the side of the car that don't have a coupler is a dead track. From that I have read where the tracks were going to be close together only locomotives would be able to run on the track that has the coupler due to no enough room for anything else to pas on the other track. right now the car only move back and forth., I don't have enough room to add turnouts so the car can go to other locations. The rolling mill and forge is just down the track if I do decide to extend the track any.

I always wondered how they

I always wondered how they melt metals and make new things with it at die casting companies. How come the furnace they use to melt the metal stays strong even at high temperatures? I visited a die casting company ( http://pacdiecast.com/ )some months ago and the work they do there is really amazing. I got to see molten metal.

I always wondered how they...

The furnaces are lined with a heat resistant "refractory brick". So are the hot metal cars, etc.
