Sugar Beet Guy

While procrastinating over making repairs to the layout after a disastrous operating session in May, I decided to update some scenery and add some structures to areas that were mostly, well, blank.  Here are some quick shots of some of the work.

Coors Barley Elevator

Johnstown has a very distinctive barley elevator operated by Coors. The Johnstown wye is its home.  It has been a brown paint desert for way too long so it was time to do something.  The silos are PVC pipe covered with some Plastruct tank wrappers. The elevator and barley conveyer are balsa shapes covered with ModelBuilder  “3D” printouts. The two smaller buildings are styrene boxes also covered with ModelBuilder prints.  The structure was selectively compressed to fit the wye.

Besides the Coors elevator, I ballasted and added ground cover to the “Longmont” staging yard. I need to do a better job of blending the Longmont sugar factory photo with the backdrop.

Below is a photo of the prototype elevator.

Pulliam Sugar Beet Dump

The Welty branch has also been a brown paint desert for way too long.  I added some sugar beet fields quite awhile ago but no other details were done.  Now there is an already harvested beet field being plowed under while the others await the harvest crews.  The plowed field is a Scenic Express product.

Cache La Poudre River Trestle

The Poudre River south of Windsor Is finally realized. A low trestle bridge spans the Environtex water.  Debris around the pilings is leftover scrap from Super Trees.  I still need to paint backdrop scenery and add trees and bushes to the background. But at least there is a bridge now.

Coor's Beer

George.

Terrific job building the Coor's structure, The backdrop scenery I would try painting it yourself , If it don't work out just paint it blue again.

Looks great.....don't add too much. Less is more. You are doing a terrific job of a really cool prototype road. Keep posting!

Big Thompson River

SW9 #121 is shoving some covered hoppers to the Colorado Alfalfa Products elevator in Hillsboro, east of Johnstown on the Milliken Branch. There is no runaround so the crew makes two trips down the branch; one to pickup outbound cars, one to spot setouts.  The small yard by the Johnstown sugar plant is used to sort cars.

The trestle is over the Big Thompson River and is surrounded by sugar beet and alfalfa fields.

Buda Beet Dump

The Buda beet dump is along the Welty branch, just west of Pulliam.  Farmers have brought some truckloads of beets to the dump which are bring weighed.  The photo of the beet piler is a stand-in until some serious scratch building is attempted.  I only need six or seven pilers around the layout, hinting at the need for some CAD work and 3D printing.

Irrigation Ditch

One of the ubiquitous Northern Colorado irrigation ditches runs near the Hardman beet dump, northwest of Johnstown.  A beet truck has been loaded and is heading towards Loveland, a harbinger of bad times for the railroad beet trains.

Sugar Plant Sign

An Art Deco sign sits outside the Loveland plant, telling passers-by all about the buildings on site.

Settling Pond

The settling pond for boiler house clean-out water sits behind the engine facilities.  The grey stuff is actual fireplace ash.
