I hosted a slide night last week for some friends both local as well as from Portland and Seattle.  It was the annual "The Americans are coming!" slide night that we have had on the US Thanksgiving weekend for at least the past 20 years or so.  One of my guests (thanks Barry!) brought along a copy of VIA Rail Canada Consists and marshalling of trains bulletin from October 1978.  What a treasurer trove of information it is.

It lists every train VIA ran in 1978 with what equipment each train was to operate with along with where it should go in the train.  You could not ask for a more detailed breakdown of how to set up your train.  Of particular interest to me was the consists for Trains 90-91 (Winnipeg-Thompson and Thompson-Winnipeg) and Trains 92-93 (Winnipeg-Churchill and Churchill-Winnipeg).

These will be invaluable reference material for me.  I never realized how much head end equipment ran on 92-93, it almost could be a mixed train.  I realize this is prior to the VIA cutbacks of the early 1980's, but I'm thinking some modellers license is in order here.  Now to put this to use in setting up my passenger trains.

My friend Barry W. has been a great help with photos and information like this.  Very much appreciated.

More gold

In addition there is consist information for the Lynn Lake mixed train, and VIA ran an RDC-2 from Saskatoon Saskatchewan to The Pas in that era.  Perhaps an excuse to buy one of the new Rapido RDCs.  As well, there was the Wabowden-Gillam-Churchill mixed train that I plan to run out of The Pas on the layout.

VIA had a combine that ran from Flin Flon to Snow Lake, likely on the tail end of the daily ore train that operated between the two points.  Yet another modelling opportunity.  Northern Manitoba was a busy place back in the day.  Now to get it modelled.

Awesome!

That is a great find, Marc!  I look forward to seeing progress on your layout.  We share the same era, though not quite the same locale, but VIA will be a significant portion of my railroad as it is yours.
