Starting in January on TrainMasters TV, the new TOMA Project Layout series!

The layout is coming along nicely and we will have it on display in our booth at the Amherst Show this coming January. We're modeling the modern day Vermont Railway, and it's turning out to be a total blast.

Here's a few sneak peeks ... these scenes are not finished, but they're taking shape!

And my favorite, the Vermont covered bridge scene a-building ...

A number of the detailing efforts will also appear in MRH as articles throughout 2017.

Miles and Fran Hale did this work

Miles and Fran Hale did this work on the bridge and scene, so they will need to comment on how it was done. I'll ask ...

Update: TMTV Producer Barry Silverthorn built the bridge from a Walthers kit. Here's a link to the kit on Amazon:  http://a.co/5BoGvW3

Miles & Fran are...

excellent modelers. The structure in the lead photo is beautiful! I hope they took construction photos for a "how-to" article on its construction. Looking forward to the TMTV series. Years ago they visited my old layout during a regional NMRA convention and they presented me with a gift during their visit...a very large box of Woodland Scenics "used" ground foam they recycled from their clinic. I'm still using it!         John

Lead photo structure

Hi John:

I believe the structure in the lead photo was actually built by TMTV founder Barry Silverthorn. He's a pretty darned good modeler himself.

Cheers!

@Trevor...

Apology to Berry, he did a wonderful job on the building. Can you tell I really like it?  Thanks for the heads up Trevor.      John

Structures

I did build the bridge, and was impressed with the tooling that produced it. It's a kit offered by Walthers, but manufactured for them by Kibri (and currently on sale at Walthers website).

The large factory building was kitbashed by Efram Ellenbogen from two Walthers structures.  I built the rest.

We'll have the details in the TOMA series that starts in January, along with some companion articles in MRH. I'll be making a rare appearance as a guest in the segment on structures.

Now back to work!

Tempting!

I was going to say that the photos are so tempting that I want to go over to the modern scene......

Wiring and DCC

I am really interested in watching how the layout is wired for DCC including the sometimes troublesome turnouts. Also in the mix is bulletproof track work making derailments are rarity. The scenery and buildings are just icing on the cake.

Thanks Barry .

I will look forward to watching TMTV  for the TOMA series .

Might just by the bridge instead of scratch building ??

Thanks again for all the information keep up the good work .

Bridge

Great looking layout.

MR has run plans for a couple of covered bridges over the years. No idea which issue though. RMC may have run one also.

Here's the layout plan ...

Of course, there's staging added as well, so we can run trains back and forth through the module sections.

Mods

Joe, can you explain the building  process of the mods, or email me, as I don't have the funds to do the show as I would like, but this is the way I wish to go...one at a time

Wiring today

image(3).jpg

Since the cast and crew have left for a couple of weeks, it's my job to finish up wiring on the third TOMA project module.

It occurred to me today that although I've built about a dozen layouts over the years, this is the first that I've wired for DCC. I learned a lot from watching Ed Wilson from NCE and Miles work on the first module  Anyone can do this job with the usual: the right tools, planning, patience...and the appropriate music as accompaniment.

Wiring

Wiring is my least favorite part of the hobby. It's not hard - just the opposite, I understand it fine, but that makes it just plain tedious. It pays to take your time and to have a buzzer (I use the continuity setting on my Volt-Ohm-Meter) connected to the rails while you're doing it. The second a buzzer goes off you know you've screwed up. So much easier than dealing with a mystery short later ...

Joe, wiring cannot be more tedious......

.......than spreading and affixing ballast.  Wow, what a bore, almost as bad as driving spikes. Both seem to move along at a snails pace. Nice looking layout.

Don't wire it....

It's a perfect application for dead-rail. It's HO. You could fit 10 pounds of batteries in those locomotives. (Yes, I'm in N Scale.)

Hook up a transmitter to the DCC track bus and away we go! No wires anywhere near the layout. No frog wires either. Is there a reason you need the Turtles?
