OK my other model railroad is the live steam park, Train Mountain.  So we got a new toy to use for our LAYOUT MAINTENANCE.  Its called a Brush Blazer, what a beast!  A quickie test today, we cleared about an acre in less than an hour!  Russ

Getting cold yet?

Looks like eastern Oregon in the late fall. I've always wanted to visit Train Mountain but family obligations in K Falls always prevented the trip. What would be the best time of year to visit? I would guess September after school starts to be able to find cheap cars, flights, and places to stay?

A visit to the Mountain

Neil,

If you check the website you will see we have 7 meets a year.  During 4 of those there is a work week and those 4 meets have the highest number of participants.  Every 3 years we have a Triennial International Meet.  Imagine 380 plus live steamers from all over the globe descending on little Chiloquin!    Next Tri will be in 2018.  Of course you will always be welcome when ever you can visit.  Send me an email if you are planning to be in the area and I will help get something setup.  russ at hobby-tronics dot com.  Russ

Thanks Russ!

I have been thinking that a visit in 2018 would be nice to coincide with the NNGC and maybe a 40th year class reunion. Lots of good reasons to visit!

How about a teaser

How about a teaser?  Main Yard during a Triennial Meet.  There are several other yards in addition to this one.  380 trains from 17 countries, 33 states, with some 2500 visitors.  Tons of fun!  Russ

Blind corner clearing

We need to clear the brush for two reasons.  The most obvious of course is the inherent fire danger, but a second and equally important safety reason is visibility.  Unlike our ON30 layout our live steam layout needs to be clear enough for us RIDERS to see ahead of us.  With 37 miles of track located in 2,200 acres of forest land we do have lots of brush.  The track is mountainous and therefore very curvy!  The curves quickly become a hazard as the brush continues to grow.  Up to now keeping the right of way clear has been a very hard manual job.  Check out our latest video of our new machine in action 'clearing' the right of way.  Russ
