Well, after a couple of years of waiting, my railroad signal is up, although I admit I didn't have much to do with it. A friend who arranged for me to get the Ex-SP/UP Valley Line signal (he got three) and his son had already put their three up that morning and with the trackhoe operator had erecting them to a science by the time they got to mine. My best course was to stay out of the way... and I ended up with this:

Try to mentally erase the green bin... the trackhoe operator was nice enough to dig up a nasty patch of blackberry vines I had and stuffed them in there.

Now I get to replace the bottom target with one that hasn't been clipped and run wiring in. I am not using the original wiring, or even the lights - the wiring is chopped up, and I can run household current to there (safely) and use color changing LED's for a light source.

Much nicer than pink flamingos

I'd love one in my front yard, but I'm pretty certain the HOA wouldn't approve it.

So....

Hi Jeff,

Enquiring minds & all that...What signal aspect will be displayed when your layout is open for visitors??

Looks good, Jeff

Do you know the story behind why the B head has a clipped background? That's unusual. LOUIEx2 said: "I'd love one in my front yard, but I'm pretty certain the HOA wouldn't approve it." My HOA wouldn't even get the chance to see the paperwork for the request. My wife would have already nixed it!

Hummm

That would go well with my switch stand...

My friend has one in his front yard also.

We replaced the lamps with 12 volt automotive bulbs and powered it with an old model train transformer, although an old car battery would work.  Paul Schmidt would have to give you the wiring diagram to make the colors change.  Come to think of it those solenoids are probably not 12 volts.  It could still be done if you're so inclined.

Michael. . .

. . . you and I helped hoist that thing up back in '99! I have the photos!

Clipped target

No idea on the clipped target, although Bob Frazeur thinks it was in a limited clearance area somewhere around Eugene.

I'll be using this light, or two identical to it, in the heads:  https://www.amazon.com/FUBARBAR-16-color-Change-Wireless-Control/dp/B01EL7IM5W/  The only issue might be that they'll be too bright. I won't be using any of the original lighting or wiring.

The signal aspect when I start hosting op sessions will be green over red, for Clear.

Around Christmas is may just be flashing green and red.

Too bright

Well, you just need to experiment with resistor values on the power lead, Jeff.

Resistors on 110VAC....

Yeah... let me think on that.... I don't think so. That's a bit more interesting electrical wiring than I want to get involved with.

I'd be more likely to put some tint film in front of it.

Before you rip the 10v DC guts out of them

Email the proprietor at  http://joezgarage.com/ to see if he's still making his Searchlight timers. I have one he redid for a 1:1 scale PRR position light dwarf signal I have in my den - he used to market one for a two-head searchlight signal that would cycle through the various aspects on a timer. Those type SA or H-2 lighting mechanisms are pretty cool if you can get them to function again (and it keeps your new item original - should you want to sell it one day).

Also, check out the Yahoo group Railway Signaling at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Railway-Signaling/info  for expert help on rewiring what the RR ripped up. I have two primary hobbies... the 1:87 stuff downstairs and the 1:1 stuff upstairs (and outside). For those of us that love signals we can't have it any other way - HOA be d@mned!

Enquiring MInds

Speaking of which, I wonder if the Feds are going to be interested in why you've installed a color-coded signaling device in your yard?

I like Oztrainz idea; something like the torch in front of Moda Center.

I'm curious about the horn files for the W & W locomotives. When I lived in Albany the P & W fleet included some nice sounding 3 and 5 chime horns. I haven't heard them much around Hillsboro. Do you plan to replicate the multi-chime horns?

Maybe eventually...

Right now "personalized" sound files for the locomotives is way down on the list.
