The online railroad name generators do not fit my ideas of  proper USA railroad names. Here is a proposed rule set for generating fictitious RR names.  Insert your own place names and you are good to go.  A place name can be a city, state, river, mountain, or any geographic feature.

Suggestions are encouraged.

Read it like this: [required], (optional), and commas indicate choices

  • [place name] [Railroad, RR, (Short) Line(s)]
  • [East(ern) , South(ern), West(ern), North(ern)] [place name] [Railroad, RR, (Short) Line(s)]
  • [place name] & [East(ern) , South(ern), West(ern), North(ern)] [Railroad, RR, (Short) Line(s)]
  • [place name] & [place name] [Railroad, RR, (Short) Line(s)]
  • [Port, Terminal] [place name] (Metropolitan) [Railroad, RR]
  • [place name](interurban, metropolitan)[Railroad, RR, Lines]

Or....

Pick a prototype.

Pick a location.

Look in the timetable.

There's your name.

For [place name] you could

For [place name] you could further substitute

[name] + Valley, Mountain, Creek, River

eg Doug Creek Interurban Railway
