Has anyone checked the site lately? Doesn't seem good and something sad that will affect many.

Caboose Hobbies is relocating

Caboose Hobbies is relocating because their current landlord sold the building. Exactly where they will end up and how much they will be a local hobbyshop versus an online store remains to be seen.

No new info but,

Google: fox31 Denver, then search: Caboose Hobbies. There's an evening news clip and an interview with the owner.

Not so sure

Not so sure they are relocating. Their website now states they are not taking repairs, and I know from a source there that half the merchandise is already gone, plus they are sending all consignment items back to the owners. So draw your own conclusions fellas.

Looks like the end of an era

I live in Denver and the store is basically empty now. The employee moral is low and it doesn't "feel like" the store is going to revive anywhere. I also find it hard to believe the landlord only gave them 90 days to vacate. Stock was getting low prior to them announcing the landlord sale so I think this may have been on their radar for longer than they led us to believe. Sad for sure, it was an amazing shop.

I never visited CH but have

I never visited CH but have ordered from them numerous times over the years; a couple of my brass pieces came from them and some rolling stock.

Sounds like everyone is preparing themselves for an LHS funeral.  The fat lady hasn't sang yet.  I'll take the owners word at face value from the interview last week and take a wait and see attitude.   I imagine we'll all know one way or the other within the next few months.

Cost

The issue could be the cost of new space. I have no idea what it costs for store front or warehouse with a front office/store space is but you can bet it is probably up quite a bit like most of the rest of the country. Being part of a local non profit space is definitely no cheap and it takes time to find it.

Patience folks we will know eventually.

Cost, etc

I hate to be negative about this but the store, which has been great until recently, but it has been on a decline for quite some time. It was easier to order online than it was to drop in and purchase something. Sometimes I would see it was available on the website and think, I'll get it on the way home from work, but of course it wasn't available in the store. I think they have been not replenishing their stock for some time. Certainly before the announcement.

I would be very surprised if they start up again. The cost of a long term lease in the Denver market with the square footage they need would be expensive.

Not so sure either

I was in Denver on July 12 and at Caboose Hobbies. This was the day before the email went out telling of the building being sold. I always visit the parts wall and I have never seen so many empty slots. The brass repair desk was gone along with several showcases. I have never seen the brass inventory so low. I have been to Caboose every summer since they were located down on 15th st. I asked the clerks what was going on. Nobody knew anything. Keep in mind this was before the email blast went out. The draw down of the inventory had obviously begun much earlier. I have done thousands of dollars of business with Caboose buying and selling brass. It hurts to see the store in this condition.

I wonder what's going to happen to the little industrial switcher located in the brass area.

The drawdown in inventory

The drawdown in inventory indeed started long ago, from personally shopping there, and from several sources there. From a previous post it appears the store is indeed almost empty. From a source there concerning the industrial loco by the brass cases, there have been several offers on it....

Ok, you all were right.

Ok, you all were right.  Apparently several have received emails today that Duane Miller has officially thrown in the towel.

When I saw the news interview, his age did not escape me but I was hoping CH didn't hinge on a single man who was at or past the age of retirement; that spoke volumes and if there was no heir apparent or someone to pass the torch too, this outcome was simply inevitable.  This push out the door happened to be timed such as to equal the straw that broke CH back.

Fleeting are the works of man.  Goodbye Caboose Hobbies.

Duane Miller has decided to close CH

The front splash page says it all. Sad day. The Millers have decided to retire.
