I started this new topic as an off-shoot from my previous topic located at https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/proto-freelance-connectingbridge-or-shortbranch-line-railroad-12203656

I've been trying to come up with an idea, concept, and trackplan for a proto-freelanced layout for a 10'x12' (8'x12' useable due to a closet and a door/opening along the one wall) and I've finally come up wit a name for the railroad!

The Tiadaghton Valley Railroad & Coal Company (TVRR) and The Tiadaghton Lumber Company (TLCO) for a logging line that will serve a  sawmill serviced by the TVRR. I got the inspiration for the railroads name from the Pine Creek that runs through the PA Grand Canyon.

"Pine Creek is named for the many pine trees that lined (and now again line) much of its banks. [2] The Iroquois called Pine Creek Tiadaghton, which according to Owlett, either meant "The River of Pines" or "The Lost or Bewildered River". The Fallbrook RR, then NYC, then Conrail, ran through the Grand Canyon and paralleled the Pine Creek from Wellsboro Junction, PA to Jersey Shore, PA.

I'm going with small steam that I'm planning on adding TCS WOWSound to....I have a Mantua 0-6-0 with slope back tender, a Spectrum 4-4-0, a Spectrum 4-6-0, a Roundhouse RTR 2-8-0, and anew Spectrum 50 ton Class B Climax for the logging branch.

I've been looking at a few different prototype and model railroads for inspiration...The Buffalo & Susquehanna/B&O/Wellsville, Addison, and Galeton; all of which I like due to camping in Wellsboro and going to my family's hunting cabin in Galeton, and the Coudersport and Port Allegany as well as the East Broad Top 3' narrow gauge.

In the past 5 years or so I've become a big fan of John Allen's G&D and I reference that for ideas as well. In the past month I discovered, and really like, Rob Clark's Cornhill & Atherton and reference that as well. He has roughly the same amount of space available as I do in the spare bedroom in the apartment, however, I can't attach a valance or anything to the walls, since it's an apartment, and I would need to double deck it as well so that makes it a challenge.

That's why I decided to forego a track plan and construction for now. I also lack the funds and ability to construct a layout since I had a stroke and have been out of work since January. In the meantime I've been working on my layout design elements, a roster for locos/freight/passenger equipment, a public timetable for passenger service. I plan on coming up with an employee timetable and other operational paperwork since I'd like to have something very operations oriented.

Does anybody know of template based software for creating this type of paperwork? I would like to slowly start obtaining my freight car fleet. I've sold some excess trains and purchased 4 2-packs (total of 8) of Ulrich Models Climax Log Car kits, (does anyone have instructions for these that they could send me because mine came without them) two Bachmann unlettered bobber cabeese for the log train(s), two walthers wooden off set cupola cabeese, and I've been collecting Roundhouse 50' overland coach kits to strip and repaint and I have a complete train (combine, baggage/rpo, 3 coaches, and a business car) and I have a BLI wooden REA express reefer to hook on to the front end of that.

My next purchases will be data only wooden freight car and steel hopper kits which will be mainly Accurail since they're one of the only companies that made them and they're fairly easy and nice looking kits to build. My next post...the concept, LDE's, Rosters, and Public Timetable so far

Strong inspiration

is a great starting point. Sounds like you have a good start on your fleet and will be able to start modeling your trains. Because of your apartment limits ( and future moves) perhaps you should consider building one or two modules based on location design elements (LDE's). The TOMA approach outlined in an MRH article and a couple of forum threads here and here, would be a great way to get started on your layout without needing a full layout plan. You can enjoy modeling now, and hopefully share your progress and questions here.

I really like your concept with logging and lumber modeling and how you have a geographic area to tie it down to. I hope you will further elaborate your ideas as they develop. Good luck and happy modeling!

Great location

Nathan,

Nice to see someone modeling the north central Pa railroads.  I currently model the Cammal and Black Forest railroad located in Cammal Pa.  There is plenty of ideas out there.  I will be following along as the layout progresses.

Re: Strong inspiration

Hi Kent,

Thanks! I still need to get some more therapy under my belt before I can start modeling again but I hope to get back to it ASAP! For now I'll just be collecting. I'll have to look into the module and TOMA approach. At least, as soon as I can get back to them, I have a couple of local train clubs I can "play trains" at in the meantime. I'm ready to commit to a double deck design based off the MRR N&W Abingdon Branch like Rob Clark did with his Cornhill and Atherton. I lke to have the big picture in front of me so I don't think the TOMA method would work for me.The N&W Abingdon branch size is perfect for the spare room. My concern is how do I build a double deck layout without attaching anything to the walls? I thought about a single level but I'm concerned I'll run out of room really fast. Also, since the stroke, I'll need help building it. Can you recommend a good easy to use layout design program? The stroke affected my left side and I'm left handed so the graph paper, pencil, compass, and ruler method is a bit challenging, I tried XTrakCAD but it seems hard to use. I intend to keep you all updated as I go.

See the concept below...

"Tiadaghton Valley Railroad & Coal Company

Concept

The Tiadaghton Valley Railroad & Coal Company is a class III Short Line Railroad chartered on June 16th 1889. Service across the entire line from Tiadaghton to Coalbrookdale began in November, 1892. The primary purpose of the railroad was to haul semi-bituminous coal from the mines in Coalbrookdale to the interchange with the XXXXXXXXXX Railroad in Tiadaghton Junction. The railroad also carried substantial amounts of lumber, via a connection with the Tiadaghton Lumber Company, and passengers with some agricultural goods, fuel oil and general freight.

Freight Hauled

Coal, lumber, fuel oil, agricultural goods, livestock, grain, general merchandise"

As I said, I'll be sure to keep you all updated as I go.Thank you!

Re: Great location

Hi Steve,

Not exactly modeling them in this particular case; just drawing inspiration from some of my favorites. The only thing I really copied was the "Tiadaghton" for the Iroquois meaning since I thought it would be generic enough so that it wouldn't seem like I was modeling a specific area. The "Railroad and Coal Company is froom the EBT; my favorite railroad. The conccept is a mix of history from the EBT and the C&PA. The town names are plays on town names along the PA Grand Canyon Line as well as the EBT and the H&BTM made by mixing in family member and animal names and generic town names, however, they may change because I don't want to associate with any prototype or I'll tend to start copying the prototype too much and I want to keep the railroad unique.

As I said in the OP, I really like operations ever since I joined the NMRA and participated in ops sessions. The public timetable, with the exception of town names and mileage, is based off a Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain Railroad Timetable. The loco numbers are based off of the C&PA locos and EBT #3; the Mantua 0-6-0. The passenger car  numbers are based off of the EBT's Laconia Coaches and Combines as well as the caboose numbers; 27 and 28.

I created all my paperwork using Open Office; a free open source alternative to MS Office. It wl let me upload them  but if you try to open them using word it either won't work or will mess up the formatting. I might try converting them to PDF to post here but they're not complete.

I also really like the PA logging railroads and I have the entire PA Logging Railroad Series by Kline, Taber, etc. Thanks for following along and, if you don't mind, could you please send some pictures of your layout to nathan.kline83-at-gmail-dot-com? That's all for tonight. Thanks!

Uploading files

This was discussed recently and Bill Brillinger answered it well. Use the search function as Joe mentioned it as a "little know" or tip.  http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/26939

The title alone

Now you have my interest. Maybe email a file to me and I'll give it a try - timetable?

Re: The title alone

Hi Neil,

I tried to upload via the link technique. It wouldn't show which files were uploaded and it would put a link in the post of the last file uploaded and that's  it. I tried uploading again and it said that the file I ws trying to upload was already uploaded or on the server. What's your e-mail address? I'll send the LDE's file. Thanks!

Files not on server

Just checked my account to see if the files were uploaded and they're not there. This will be a project for another day.

Click on my handle

Click on "umauma railway" and select "contact" so the email box will open. Add the file and send. Or ... Send it to neil_c_e@yahoo.com. Many of us have Yahoo! Accounts in order to access the groups there.

By the way, it sounds like you are doing the right stuff. Only a link will show. You can upload a page or pages of samples as images and link those to your document if the idea is to provide a Word or Excel file to share or edit.

If you click on the image is will (should) take you to the file that I uploaded from my Dropbox that you sent. You may also simply add the link and look like this:  /sites/model-railroad-hobbyist.com/files/users/umauma railwayfiles/TVRR%20Public%20Timetable(2).pdf

I think I finally figured it out and these links should all work. None of these files are finished and most won't be until the layout is built, however I wil update them as I go. I will also post updates on my progress here. Thoughts/comment/suggestions?

Re: Layout Design Program

Hi Nathan,

Layout design programs seem to have a steep learning curve. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I will comment on a recommendation, and you can search for previous threads on the topic up at the top right of the page.

Over the years, I have tried 3 or 4 of the programs and have not had enough success to stick to it. I have purchased Cadrail a couple of times, and 3rd Planit once. Both pretty complex and have an upfront cost. There are other free programs too but nothing that grabbed me. I have resorted to using Corel Draw since I know it well (since 1991) and have a recent version. Do you already have any drawing software that you are familiar with?

Re: Layout Design Program

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the reply.

I've never paid for any track layout design software. I think I tried Cadrail, 3rdplanit, and XTrakCad and I could not figure them out. I took classes on AutoCad 2000 in high school and I didn't have any trouble using that. I don't have it on this laptop though. Maybe I could try Google sketchup?

Duplicate post

Nate:

Not sure why my post shows up twice. I'll spam one of them but may lose both. Since you figured out how to post I hope you don't mind.

I used the timetable, by the way, because I wanted to borrow the format for my own line - with your permission.

Re: Duplicate post

Hi Neil,

That's fine since I figured out how to post files.

It's a mix of an East Broad Top and Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain timetable. Go ahead and feel free to borrow the format. I made it in Open Office as a text/word document using tables and converted it to PDF format using a free online PDF converter. I linked to the original Open Office file so you can download open office and edit it through there or save it as a word document. Enjoy!

New/Updated files

I just uploaded some new and updated operations files. I borrowed the Employee Rule Book; taken from the standard rules for single track of the American Railway Association, and supplemented with model operations by Jack Burgess of Yosemite Valley fame. I also borrowed Jack's employee time table format. I will modify both to suite my needs. Of course they're still works in progress until I have a track plan and layout built but I need something to occupy me in the meantime. Let me Know what you think!

Back to EBT in HO!

After much consideration and discussion with fellow model railroaders I have decided to stick with modeling my favorite railroad; the 3' narrow gauge East Broad Top in HO scale! I am in the process of selling off the equipment I have acquired for the TVRR & TLCO. If you're interested inpurchasing any of the equipment, and for a list of what's available, please contact me off-list at nathan.kline83-at-gmail-dot-com. I've started a blog of my efforts to recreate the EBT here. Thanks!
