Atlas GP39-2/38/40 with a Railmaster Speaker

Okay, I think I may have goofed, rather expensively, here. When I bought my two new Trainman GP39-2 locomotives I thought that Atlas had converted over to using the new Gold Master chassis with speaker ports in it exclusively - just putting extra weight in when they didn't actually install speakers.

This is how my non-sound MP15DC came.

So when I bought a QSI Revolution-A to put in one of them, I was happy that it came with a 1" speaker. No problem!

Take out the couplers, pop the top off... problems.

No speaker ports - it's the original no-speaker chassis design.

Oh well. The Railmaster Bass Reflex speaker worked really well in my Alco C425, so I got online and ordered a few of those with some Paypal funds I had.

Got the speakers... and... they don't quite fit. With the Atlas board in place (the Revolution A will replace it) it's just a little too tall to fit under the dynamics, and if I pull out the back weight (my solution for the C425)... it's a few millimeters too long to fit under the radiators before it runs into the soundboard again. Even with the lugs cut off.

Has anyone successfully installed the Railmaster DSM8 speaker in an Atlas Geep chassis? Got photos?

The speaker I'm talking about is the second one on this page - it's wider than it is tall, so I can't just flip it on it's side, either: http://www.railmasterhobbies.com/Speakers.htm

The manufacturer doesn't do installs, so he doesn't have any photos of it either.

Hi Jeff, You can file some

Hi Jeff,

You can file some material off the sides (and ends) as the walls are fairly thick. I used this speaker in a Genesis F-unit and trimmed the corners of one end of the enclosure to match the contour of the frame.

Honestly though, the better speaker choice for GPs is the DS1635-8. It's also 12.50 and includes a large baffle! This is an outstanding speaker, and is the one I use in most of my sound installs.
