I'm still toying with the trackplan after the suggestions by Trevor Marshall, but my mind has been wandering to more esoteric things. Namely, the name. Westhaven was the district I lived in as I was growing up in Montreal. I remember the 4x6 layout my dad had made for us that slid under his bed. We named that Westhaven RR and I had some idea that it was like the New Haven railroad.

However, in trying to get some initials for my layout I have been wondering if Westhaven should be one word or two. In the real world it seems to be one word. Of course, I have modeller's license to do as I please. So I wonder between WHI (West Haven Industrial) WIR (Westhaven Industrial Railway) or simply WH (as in New Haven)

What's in the name. I

What's in the name. I like WIR and nickname it the "WIRE"

Are you open to alternative names.

MRS in St Louis is the Manufacturers Railway, so how about the MRW or the WHM Could be put into a herald fairly easily with an italic text.

It could also be Westhaven.

It could also be Westhaven. No law saying that ONLY the first letters go into the reporting marks. Maybe a tornado type graphic in the railroad's logo.

I was thinking of something

I was thinking of something along these lines, but maybe more circular a graphic. The reporting marks WHIR would suggest a whirlwind of activity (like Bugs Bunny's buddy, the Tasmanian Devil) - something that I would like to advertise as a railroad.

@Mike

I like that graphic but wonder if it is too modern. The layout is set in the 70s. I like where you are going though.

It is a modern looking logo,

It is a modern looking logo, but I was thinking that if you put it in a circle, kind of like the Piedmont Northern logo, it would work.

I think Don's. . .

. . . suggestion is right on. If you're freelancing a road name, do what you do when you pick a paint color for your house -- go with your gut and what feels right.

Nit - Picking

Greg,

I like your New Haven inspired logo, and I can see how you could like it very much.

I just wonder a bit, based on nothing approaching real knowledge of graphics or the New Haven.

Ir your two letters are from the same font, what I wonder means nothing. But I notice that all the main bars of the W  are roughly the same width, which is not true of the H. Also, the serifs on the W are smaller than those on the H. Can you keep the same total width of the H but reduce the length of its serifs, and make the vertical bars of the H narrower and make the horizontal bar of the H fatter? It might make the logo look more balanced.

Whether you follow my suggestions or not, that logo will look good.

Ditto

I have a similar reaction to DrJoIS.  I really think the New Haven inspired logo is very appealing.  But the H looks like it would if you had started with a proportional space font (so the H started narrower than the W) and just made the H wider.  If this wasn't created from scratch, but done from an existing font, I suggest finding a font you like that is a fixed width font as the starting point.

Here is one site with a whole lot of free slab serif fonts.  Most are proportional spaced, but there are a few that are fixed width:

Fonts

I agree with the statements made. I was just playing with what I had. I did find a font inspired by the NH but it wasn't quite right with the W either. Thanks for the link to the fonts. I will play more with this idea and see what I can come up with. I think I'm on to something that does what I want and gives a nod to the old 4x6 we had when I was a kid.

West Haven has certainly become a two word name which begs the question are there a Haven, East Haven etc... I can see some more modelling dollars going to Bill Brillinger for more custom decals.

noodling around with this...

so I've discovered that there are a lot of wonky variations on the NH logo, but here are some ideas I was toying with for you...

Kicking logos.

Greg and Bill. Those are some kicking logos. I love em! Like one of the posters said, your railroad - your final say. I'll be following your progress. This is my kind of layout. If it brings back good memories of your father, then it's pure gold. What era are you modeling and what locos will you run?

I knew it.

Bill seems to be doing the work before I even ask him. That's service.

Seriously, that's exactly what I am looking for Bill. We'll have to talk.

Era and Locos

Set in the 70s. Mostly first generation diesels. It's a tight budget shortline. Running mostly leased locos from CP. Have to have at least one done in the home road. I hear Atlas might be bringing out their RS11 again.
