I have been without a permanent work bench for about three years now. A couple of trips to the land of Ikea and some persistence, here is what I have come up with. Finally completed this afternoon. Now to unpack the tools and start building some models. Never though I would miss the smell of Tenax 7R.

Construction Details

The metal vertical shelving is from an "Edsal 30 in. W x 60 in. H x 12 in. D Steel Canning Shelving Unit". You can order them though Home Depot. They just do not carry them in the store. Think of them as an erector set, you don't have to put them together they way the picture is on the box.

The Ikea Parts used are:

  • ADILS Leg, Diameter: 1 5/8" Height: 27 1/2",  902.179.72  qty: 2
  • LINNMON Table Top, White, Size 59"x29-1/2" 202.511.39
  • BITRÄDE Shelving unit, White, Size 26-3/4"x53-1/8" 402.398.15

As sharp eye will note that the Ikea shelving unit is 3/4" shorter than the legs. So you have to add at least some 1x to the bottom of it to bring it up to the leg length. The legs have a foot that screws out for leveling. Since my basement floor is pretty uneven, I added some screw out feet and t-nuts to the bottom of the shelf as well.

Rather than use the "cardboard" back that came with the shelves, I cut a piece of white hardboard (basically masontine panel prefinished white on one side) to go on the back. After gluing and nailing that make the shelving quite strong.

Anther piece of the hardboard is used as a spacer between the shelf and table top. Because I am using the shelf on its "side"  there is a small overhanging lip that keeps the table top from resting flat on the shelf.

Kevin Jones

Office / modeling work bench

When my daughter moved out, I moved in. I ordered a u-shaped desk with bookcase  on line from Bestar. Got a comfy chair from Staples and some bright lights from MicroMark. This has been my man-cave for many years.  Right now I'm putting together some models for my N scale T-trak module.

Great work bench. Got to ask what are the dimensions on those metal shelves on top and where did you find them? I'm always looking for a way to add better storage of stuff.

after a while it is hard to see the top

New workbench looks great, I like the large amount of vertical storage.

I am about a year into my new workbench.  This is the modeling part.  I have another table just to the right, that is for my electrical work.

I have just started to add details to the end platform of the GEX 800003 twenty axle flatcar.

Now you are set up to do some serious modeling

What ikea unit

That workbench looks good, since I don't have one yet, can you provide the ikea model/catalog number so I can look into that for my space?

Thanks

Shelving

The shelves on top are Edsal 30 in. W x 60 in. H x 12 in. D Steel Canning Shelving Unit. I bought them years ago but you can order them through Home Depot. Counting the shelves I am guessing that I used two units, as I have 9 shelves and only 7 come in the box. They are over kill as far as strength but you can not find the cheap metal shelving anymore that was prevalent about a decade ago. Think of them as erector sets where you don't have to put them together the way they look on the box.

Heres Miine...

...I am a bit short of space so SWMBO said I could have a modeling area in our lounge. However there was to be no visible clutter when it was not in use. SO I came upp with a rolltop desk which modified with a folding light and an interior lining on which to mount my tools.

I put in a master switch (on the right) which turns off everything with one power outlet and a second power outlet in the knee space.

Ready for use.

Light folded.

Closed up to hide (most) of the clutter.

Was as it is no more

My workshop fits under my layout.  I moved this year so this workshop and layout is in a 100K pieces in my new alas smaller basement.  Should have downsized before I built that railroad.  The computer and monitors were mounted on drawer slides so the whole system would slide back out of the way providing greater workspace.  The monitor and mouse moved to the under table drawer.

Thanks Kevin

Always looking for ways to improve the work bench. I'll have to see what's available locally and how I can adapt it.
