Hello Everybody,

I am a subscriber to Trainmasters.tv and have been reading MRH for some time.

I am based in England and currently building a small exhibition layout based on colliery railway operations.

It is named after a prominent mined coal seam in the area modelled, which is Cumbria. The layout is called 'Six Quarters'

Here are some photos of the progress so far

There is still a lot more to do including the building of a large building on the left hand side of the layout, the storage area/fiddle yard and the layout lighting.

I also put together this video for weathering coal wagons, hopefully all is of some interest,

Many thanks,

Oly

Very nice!

I like the choice of colours - very muted and realistic.

Looks like you are off to a really good start

Great looking

Great modeling Oly. I am fascinated by that little saddle tank  AND the diesel locomotive ! Would like to see some more pics of both of those. You exemplify the fact you can do a lot of modeling in a small space.

Thank you!

Thank you for all the super kind comments...

Here are some more of the saddle tank and the diesel, along with some prototype shots...

These little saddle tanks were built for WWII and were really common working in the colleries, here is what it is based on:

The diesel would of been brought from British Rail second hand

Perfect weathering

Used, abused, but well maintained! Excellent job of weathering. I think you have made an excellent choice in motive power. Additionally, your photography skills are very good and convey the scene accurately. You get some really good angles, and you have staged the action perfectly.

Welcome!

Nice to see a few more euro modelers on the site. Gets lonely out here being one of the few euro modelers here in the states. I lived in England at RAF Upper Hayford back in my High School days and when dad went on vacation to Europe I caught the bug. See my blog for my layout progress. Great Work! we are interested keep posting!

Well done!

I'm sure the layout has given you loads of pleasure. Always nice to see a completed small layout to show you don't need a basement full of track to have a great time in the hobby! JP

Ballast?

Like the muted colors and your ballast looks very real what did you use for it?

Thanks,

JAJ

Another ballasting request

Hi Oly,

Congratulations on a job well done in a small space, Could I request some more detailed  information and photos about how you've ballasted in and around your pointwork?.

That looks like some of the best dirt-embedded point work I've seen recently. Any tips on doing around the blades and throwbar areas in particular would be appreciated.

I'm still struggling to get the look right for spilt fine coal dust in and around the pointwork. This is one area where anything loose on the wagons like dust or overfill will be shaken loose and dropped on the tracks.

This is the best I have been able to come up with so far,. the diverging road has yet to get its final dusting.

I'm a more than a little wary of doing much more work in and around the blades, so any tips from one model colliery owner to another to improve this look without wrecking the pointwork would be appreciated,

Regards,

John Garaty

Switcher in this blog

I am not sure where Oliver got his steam switcher but if you check the UK Hattons or eHattons website, they have commissioned a variety of these 0-6-0 Tank steam switchers from DJ models and they are should be available in the next two months.

ballast

Excellence job of weathering track and ballast . It looks like a fine coal slurry . It reminds me of the coal loading/washery I worked at in the 70's  in Australia

The loading stages were built in the 40's .
