Does anyone know af any companies where I could get cheep (under $100.00, or less) undecorated locomotives? I got some back in Febuary 2010 at a train show, and the custom-paint bug bit me after I completed one of them, and I would like to get some more to work on, dispite my restricted budget.

Yes, HO scale, but I'm willing to try others

Yes, I'm primarily an HO scale modeler, but I'm willing to "fudge" a little, to gain experiance. (Heck, if I knew where to get one, I would buy an undecorated 1/6 scale F-45 behemoth just to build and paint it) but I would like to stay more towards HO scale mainly.

Yes, I know the 1/6 scale F-45 would be longer than my truck's 8-foot bed (it may be longer than the truck, for all I know) but one of these days, I'll try to build one (with a V2 16 H.P. engine) and have it set up out in my front yard.

I thought I was the only one

I thought I was the only one who was nuts!  1/6th scale.  A 60 foot boxcar would be 10 feet long and almost 3 feet tall!  I've thought about doing something in G scale for a static display.  Last year I scratchbuilt an O scale hopper for my father-in-law and found I enjoyed the flexibility and precision of working in O. BTW, if you haven't tried it yet, give building your own loco from scratch or via kitbash a go.  With all the parts from Cannon, Plano, and others, you can pretty much build your own these days.  It's not as difficult as you would think, either.  There's been several articles in print magazines the last ten years showing examples of how it's done.  Also don't forget about buying a painted model and stripping the paint.  Some are easier to strip than others, so ask someone (or ask the MRH forum) about a specific brand/model before you attempt.

G Scale O scale

Mike I understand, once you work on larger scale you get the bug for bigger scale. I always modeled in HO until 1999 when I went to On30. Then last year I went back to HO and it just did not feed me like before and went back to On30. Then I started to dabbled in Gn15 and WOW !  I really liked it so I am doing a diorama for it, it will be 8 feet long by 2 feet. Here is a photo of the Bachmann On30 Davenport converted to Gn15: The before is on the left and the conversion is on the right.

Gn15, Glad I'm not the only one...

Well, Nick, Glad I'm not the only Gn15 modeler out there (I guess you are using HO scale track in  1/24 scale, like I am) One thing I have done for my first (and possibly only) narrow-gague layout is (besides the 2x4-foot layout itself) is modified an HO scale locomotive to fit the scale, and scratch-build some cars for it too.

I didn't use any On30 equipment, but I did modify a Model Power Plymouth Industrial Switcher (now ready to get a new motor from Radioshack) and the rolling stock are all just strip-wood boxes and frames mounted onto modified seccond-hand HO scale trucks. I never thought about using knuckle couplers, though. Then again, it may not work with my rolling stock.

By any chance, do you have photos of your rolling stock?  I would like to see how you mounted the couplers to them, and save myself the agrivation of cutting, and soldering back together, a few dozen small loops of cheep neckless chain (my original plan for the couplers on my fleet)

Gn15 Rolling stock

CSX Railfan,

Here is a photo of my Gn15 with some of the rolling stock on my On30/O Scale home layout . This rolling stock is from Marklin and Thomas the Tank Engine set. I prefer the Thomas the Tank engine set because they have spoke metal wheels and they really look like mining cars. I get them from Ebay for about 7.00 a car. Then I get them and repaint them and weathered them. The Kadee couplers just fit right in without any issues. I wanted to use link and pin couplers but since I am crazy about switching I decided to go with Kadees. I also bought a set of the Bachmann On30 mining cars and they are perfect for the Gn15. When I was at Georgetown, CO they had some 15 inch mining cars that were exactly like the Bachmann one.

It looks very good

The railcars look good. Now, if only I thought about that configuration, I just glued some wood to the top of 1 HO scale truck (I was in a budget cruntch at the time) Mabe I'll try to modify the cars (or use them as MOW cars)
